Researcher says Babylonian reference dates to 2 millennia before Muhammad

A research article posted on the website of terrorist-turned-Christian Walid Shoebat contends the oldest known references to the Islamic deity Allah are not in Arabian records but in Babylonian artifacts.
Ancient tablets describe “Alla” as a deity of “violence and revolution.”

“This link sheds new light since for many years we have been hearing various ideas on where Allah came from. Christian and Muslim scholars – as well as secular professors – presented numerous arguments on just who Allah really is,” wrote Ted Shoebat, the son of Walid Shoebat.
In his heavily footnoted project, he writes that historians have suggested Islam’s beginnings are found in the Persian religion Zoroastrianism, while others, including Christian writers, argue Allah was a moon-god in Babylon.
The younger Shoebat, who already has published several books, said previously the oldest known reference to “Allah” was in northern and southern Arabia about the fifth century B.C., according to Kenneth J. Thomas.
The new find, however, links the name to the Epic of Atrahasis, chiseled on tablets sometime around 1700 B.C. in Babylon.

“The beginning of the Epic of Atrahasis describes Allah as how all of the gods labored endlessly in grueling work, under the rule of the patron deity Enlil or Elil. But soon revolt of the gods had erupted, and one deity of ‘violence and revolution’ [was] named Allah (spelled by the experts as Alla),” he wrote.
Walid Shoebat said he believes this is the first time the connection has been made.
Ted Shoebat said one of the early such references in the Epic of Atrahasis states: “Then Alla made his voice heard and spoke to the gods his brothers,’ Come! Let us carry Elil, the counselor of gods, the warrior from his dwelling.”
The younger Shoebat, whose first book was “In Satan’s Footsteps,” grew up in Northern California, where he witnessed Holocaust denial, anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.
Ted Shoebat explained that no one had found any ancient pre-Islamic inscriptions that describe Allah being “worshiped purely, without idolatrous connotations.”
“The question remains as to why no expert on Assyriology or Sumerology had even suspected that ‘Alla’ had a connection with the Arabian ‘Allah,’” he wrote. “I checked the work of Thorkild Jacobsen, a foremost authority on Mesopotamian history and the dictionary of the translator, Stephanie Dally, and none make a connection between the Bablylonian ‘Alla’ and the Arabian ‘Allah.’
“Allah of the Babylonian Epic of Atrahasis was most likely kept hidden by researchers who feared controversy or even concealed the find,” he wrote. “In the epic Allah, which translators spelled ‘Alla’ (really pronounced the same way), was never even linked by any of the experts on Assyriology or any of the translators who wrote on the subject to the known Allah of Arabia and Islam.
“To those who accuse me of basing my conclusion, that Alla is Allah, on solely prejudice against Islam, I will present further evidence for my belief. It must be known to the reader that the author of the Atrahasis epic was one Ipiq-Aya who lived under the reign of the Old Babylonian king Ammi-Saduqa, and that he wrote it in the Akkadian language (the tongue of the Old Babylonian kingdom),” Ted Shoebat explained. “The ‘Akkadians’ it must be noted did not originally spring from Iraq, but had migrated from south Arabia, specifically Yemen, into Mesopotamia, where south Arabian inscriptions have been discovered, as in Kuwait on the Arab shores of the Persian gulf close to the borders of Iraq. The deities of Shamash (the Sun), and Ashdar/ Athtar (Venus) were both brought by the Akkadians from South Arabia into Mesopotamia.
“Athtar was originally a male deity of Venus for the Akkadian Arabs, but because when they had settled into Mesopotamia, they had equated Athtar with the Sumerian goddess of Venus Inanna, and would become the Babylonian Ishtar. This Athtar was also identified with the Arabian Allat, the female consort of Allah who was so revered by the Mesopotamians that they had called her Um-Uruk, or ‘the mother of the town of Erech,’ an infamous city of ancient Iraq,” he continued, “Since Allat was the feminine root of Allah, and was worshiped in Mesopotamia, and equal to the Sumerian Inanna, since they were both Venus goddesses, we should be able to find Allah associated with this goddess, based on inscriptions. In fact, we do, a Sumerian verse which directly identifies ‘Alla’ with the bridegroom of Inanna, Dumuzi or Tammuz who was an ancient deified king who once ruled the city-state of Erech, or Uruk, as the fourth king of its First Dynasty.”
He said it appears “Alla” “is an ancestral deity who was worshiped in Mesopotamia.” The writings from the time talk about Allah’s death, he explained.
“By the testimony of the Sumerians, it is clear that this Alla, or Tammuz, was once an infamous king of Erech, to only be deified by the superstitious masses of Mesopotamia.”

He has given too much ground to Islamists.

Democrats and their sharky Obamedia defense lawyers are in a snit. For three dreamy convention days in Charlotte, they told themselves that, for the first time in decades, it was their guy who had the upper hand when it came to national security. Now that bubble has burst, the way contrived narratives do when they crash into concrete challenges. At that point, an airy president of the world won’t do; we need to have a president of the United States, a job that has never suited, and has never been of much interest to, Barack Obama.
Defense against foreign enemies is the primary job of the president of the United States. The rationale for the office’s creation is national defense — not green venture capitalism, not rationing medical care, not improving the self-image of the “Muslim world,” not leaving no child behind, not blowing out the Treasury’s credit line. Yet, though we are entering the late innings, foreign policy and national defense have not been factors in the 2012 campaign.
That is worth bearing in mind when we hear the laugh-out-loud narrative of Obama as foreign-affairs chess master. The president badly wants to win reelection. If there were anything to his alleged prowess, we’d not have heard the end of it. What we’ve heard, instead, is a bumper-sticker: “Obama killed Osama.” The Left hoped to paste it over the president’s generally dreary record. Even with the Obamedia in coordinated overdrive, the plan can work only if Mitt Romney lets it work — and, thankfully, it looks like he won’t.
Give the president his due: In 2008, he said he would go hard against terrorist havens, no matter how upset this made John McCain’s cherished “allies” in Pakistan, and he has. But even the welcome slamming of jihadist redoubts is undermined by the mess Obama has made of terrorist detention — so our forces kill in situations where they could capture, drying up the intelligence reservoir that has been vital to thwarting new cells and plots.
Moreover, any president would have given the order to take bin Laden out, and just about any post-9/11 president would bomb jihadist hideouts. What’s extraordinary about Obama’s performance in this regard is that he’s one you might have wondered about — he gets graded on a curve. But, thankful as we may be, this is thin camouflage for the rest of Obama’s agenda, which is post-American, anti-constitutional, enabling of the ideology that spawns terrorism, faithless toward our real allies, and feckless in the face of menacing Iran.
The game never goes according to plan. The batted ball always manages to find the suspect fielder, no matter how hard the coach, or the campaign, tries to hide him. On the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 atrocities, the world and its affairs found the Obama administration — intruding on the president’s effort to win reelection by a brand of domestic class warfare that gives new meaning to the word “small.”
When it came, Obama’s moment was entirely predictable. It was, after all, self-inflicted: the inevitable fallout of policy crafted by the faculty-lounge pinhead, whose ideas are so saccharine smug there’s never a thought of anything so jejune as their consequences. Obama being Obama, when the consequences came, he crawled under his desk — before escaping to a Vegas fundraiser.
“The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.” So declared the Obama State Department in a statement issued on the website of its Egyptian embassy. At the time, it was clear that another episode of Muslim mayhem was imminent.
The statement is a disgrace, just as Mitt Romney said it was. It elevated over the U.S. Constitution (you know, the thing Obama took an oath to “preserve, protect, and defend”) the claimed right of sharia supremacists (you know, “Religion of Peace” adherents) to riot over nonsense. Further, it dignified the ludicrous pretext that an obscure, moronic 14-minute video was the actual reason for the oncoming jihad.
Here is the important part, however, the part not to be missed, no matter how determined the president’s media shysters are to cover it up: The disgraceful embassy statement was a completely accurate articulation of longstanding Obama policy.
As Obama struggled to put daylight between himself and his record, the press was duly pathetic. The president,Politico was quick to cavil, had nothing to do with “the statement by Embassy Cairo.” An administration official declaimed that it “was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government.” You are to believe the Obama White House exists in a galaxy separate from the Obama State Department, which itself inhabits a frontier distant and detached from the U.S. embassy in Cairo — except, one supposes, for the $38,000 in taxpayer funds the embassy spent on Obama autobiographies, apparently thought to be craved by Egyptians, at least when they’re not ever-so-moderately chanting “Obama, Obama, there are still a billion Osamas.”

In point of fact, the embassy’s statement perfectly reflects the views of the United States government under Obama’s stewardship. It is anathema to most Americans, but it has been Obama’s position from the start.
In 2009, the Obama State Department ceremoniously joined with Muslim governments to propose a United Nations resolution that, as legal commentator Stuart Taylor observed, was “all-too-friendly to censoring speech that some religions and races find offensive.” Titled “Freedom of Opinion and Expression” — a name only an Alinskyite or a Muslim Brotherhood tactician could love — the resolution was the latest salvo in a years-long campaign by the 57-government Organization of the Islamic Conference (now renamed the “Organization of Islamic Cooperation”). The OIC’s explicit goal is to coerce the West into adopting sharia, particularly its “defamation” standards.
Sharia severely penalizes any insult to Islam or its prophet, no matter how slight. Death is a common punishment. And although navel-gazing apologists blubber about how “moderate Islamist” governments will surely ameliorate enforcement of this monstrous law, the world well knows that the “Muslim street” usually takes matters into its own hands — with encouragement from their influential sheikhs and imams.
In its obsession with propitiating Islamic supremacists, the Obama administration has endorsed this license to mutilate. In the United States, the First Amendment prohibits sharia restrictions on speech about religion. As any Catholic or Jew can tell you, everyone’s belief system is subject to critical discussion. One would think that would apply doubly to Islam. After all, many Muslims accurately cite scripture as a justification for violence; and classical Islam recognizes no separation between spiritual and secular life — its ambition, through sharia, is to control matters (economic, political, military, social, hygienic, etc.) that go far beyond what is understood and insulated as “religious belief” in the West. If it is now “blasphemy” to assert that it is obscene to impose capital punishment on homosexuals and apostates, to take just two of the many examples of sharia oppression, then we might as well hang an “Out of Business” sign on our Constitution.
The Obama administration, however, did not leave it at the 2009 resolution. It has continued to work with the OIC on subordinating the First Amendment to sharia’s defamation standards — even hosting last year’s annual conference, a “High Level Meeting on Combatting Religious Intolerance.” That paragon of speech sensitivity, Secretary of State Hillary “We Came, We Saw, He Died” Clinton, hailed as a breakthrough a purported compromise that would have criminalized only speech that incited violence based on religious hostility. But it was a smokescreen: Speech that intentionally solicits violence, regardless of the speaker’s motivation, is already criminal and has always been exempted from First Amendment protection. There is no need for more law about that.
The sharia countries were happy with the compromise, though, because it also would have made unlawful speech that incites mere “discrimination” and “hostility” toward religion. Secretary Clinton’s feint was that this passed constitutional muster because such speech would not be made criminally unlawful. Yet the First Amendment says “make no law,” not “make no criminal law,” restricting speech. The First Amendment permits us to criticize in a way that may provoke hostility — it would be unconstitutional to suppress that regardless of whether the law purporting to do so was civil, as opposed to criminal.

But let’s put the legal hair-splitting aside. Knowing her legal position was unsound, and that traditional forms of law could not constitutionally be used to suppress critical examination of religion, Secretary Clinton further explained the administration’s commitment “to use some old-fashioned techniques of peer pressure and shaming, so that people don’t feel that they have the support to do what we abhor.” The government is our servant, not our master — besides enforcing valid laws, it has no business using its coercive power to play social engineer. More to the present point, however, the administration was effectively saying it is perfectly appropriate to employ extra-legal forms of intimidation to suppress speech that “we abhor.”
That is precisely what the Egyptian mob was about to do when the U.S. embassy issued its statement. The Obama administration’s position? The president endorses extortionate “peer pressure” and “shaming,” but condemns constitutionally protected speech. That’s exactly the message the embassy’s statement conveyed.
Mind you, what is playing out in Egypt — as well as Libya, Yemen, and Tunisia — is a charade. It has nothing to do with the dopey movie. There is as much or more agitation to release the Blind Sheikh — which the Obama administration has also encouraged by its embrace of Islamists, including the Blind Sheikh’s terrorist organization. The latest round of marauding is about power.
Islamic supremacists see themselves in a civilizational war with us. When we submit on a major point, we grow weaker and they grow stronger. They win a big round in the jihad. President Obama’s anti-constitutional policy — the one he lacked the courage to stand by when, shall we say, the “chickens came home to roost” — has made speech suppression low-hanging fruit. The Islamists are going for it.
In a situation that called for a president who would actually defend the Constitution, Mitt Romney rose to the occasion. The administration’s performance was, as he asserted, “disgraceful.” Further, Romney admonished,
America will not tolerate attacks against our citizens and against our embassies. We’ll defend also our constitutional rights of speech, and assembly, and religion. We have confidence in our cause in America. We respect our Constitution. We stand for the principles our constitution protects. We encourage other nations to understand and respect the principles of our constitution, because we recognize that these principles are the ultimate source of freedom for individuals around the world.
Can you imagine the current incumbent, the guy sworn to defend the Constitution, ever saying such a thing — or, better, saying it and actually meaning it? Me neither. It will be remembered as the moment the race for president finally became about the real job of apresident. It will be remembered as the moment Romney won.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Southern California filmmaker linked to an anti-Islamic movie inflaming protests across the Middle East was interviewed by federal probation officers at a Los Angeles sheriff's station but was not arrested or detained, authorities said early Saturday.
Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was interviewed at the station in his hometown of Cerritos, Calif., said Don Walker, a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy.
Federal officials are investigating whether Nakoula, who has been convicted of financial crimes, has violated the terms of his five-year probation. If so, a judge could send him back to prison.
Nakoula went voluntarily to the station early Saturday morning, wearing a coat, hat, scarf and glasses that concealed his appearance. It is unclear whether he returned to his home, which has been besieged by media for several days.
The probation department is reviewing the case of Nakoula, who pleaded no contest to bank fraud charges in 2010 and was banned from using computers or the Internet or using false identities as part of his sentence.
Federal authorities have identified Nakoula, a self-described Coptic Christian, as the key figure behind "Innocence of Muslims," a film denigrating Islam and the Prophet Muhammad that ignited mob violence against U.S. embassies across the Middle East.
Much of the film was shot inside the offices of Media for Christ, a nonprofit based in the Los Angeles-area city of Duarte. The charity raised more than $1 million last year "to glow Jesus' light" to the world.
The Riverside County man who was a script advisor to the film and who has a long history of anti-Islamic activism told the Press-Enterprise newspaper that he has received multiple death threats.
"I'm really tired," Steven Klein said when he answered the door of his home in Hemet, Calif., Friday with a pistol in his hand and clad only in a pair of white shorts stained with what appeared to be ink spots.
The newspaper said Klein, a Vietnam veteran, appeared agitated. While waving the gun, he told the newspaper he was standing up for his First Amendment rights in helping with the film and said he is prepared to die for those rights.
A federal law enforcement official said authorities had connected Nakoula to a man using the pseudonym of Sam Bacile who claimed earlier to be writer and director of the film.
Violent protests set off by the film in Libya played a role in mob attacks in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other American officials. Demonstrations against American missions have since spread to several other countries.

Iranian analyst Alireza Forghani boasted today that Jerusalem, which he claims was invaded over 50 years ago by the “pig-faced” Jews, will soon become a mass “graveyard” for the Israeli people.
Forghani, a strategy specialist in the camp of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, boasted that every city in Israel will turn into a killing ground and the longsuffering of Muslims worldwide “will be justified by the mighty Islamic Iran.” No one then will listen to the cries of the women and children of Israel, the author warned, when Jerusalem becomes “the biggest graveyard in the world.”

Forghani has also previously penned articles that laid out the legal and religious justification for the destruction of Israel and the slaughter of its people, as well as the right of Islamic Iran to obtain the nuclear bomb.
Forghani said that former U.S. National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, in his recent article “Changes in the Gulf,” stated that the U.S. should pursue a broad strategy of engagement, containment and deterrence toward Iran. Such a strategy, Forghani argued, shows that the “84-year-old Brzezinski has lost his reasoning” and ignores Iran’s strategy of confrontation.
The Islamic government has pursued confrontation on political, military, economic and cultural fronts with America, Forghani said and referred to a statement by Khamenei, whom he refers to as Imam: “As long as the United States refuses to end its evil behaviors, negotiations and establishing relations with it is a dead end.”
Therefore, engagement, containment and deterrence by America, Forghani said, “are indeed vain dreams of insane Americans.”
The author said the strategy of confrontation is rooted in the Quran and a message by Allah (Quran, 2:193): “Jihad on infidels, killing them until there are no more sinners and sedition on earth and until all are believers of Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no more aggression except against the oppressors.”
Thus, the only strategy the Islamic republic will continuously pursue will be the strategy of confrontation, Forghani said.
He argued that many regime specialists believe that the main enemies of Islam are the “Zionists” and Israel and that the center of worldwide sedition is within Israel. Forghani said that with each hour that passes, Israel is closer to the end of its existence.
“If [the Jews] do not voluntarily leave the area, then there will be no other way but to destroy the place and bury all of its inhabitants, including women and children, though the holy Al Aqsa Mosque (the third holiest site in Islam) is also located there,” he said.
Forghani argued Syria should attack Israel and claimed Iran is looking for a pretext to annihilate Israel.
“Wherever any nation or any group fights the Zionist regime, we will support them,” Forghani quoted Khamenei.
The author said this statement is taken to heart by all Muslims and Shiites, and as soon as the first bullets are fired toward Israel by Syria, Iran “must under no circumstance waste this last chance to annihilate Israel.”
There is one guarantee that Iran can give Israelis, Forghani said: Even though they did not “fulfill their messianic mission,” they will be buried in their “promised land.”
Meanwhile, the top commander of the regime’s Revolutionary Guards also warned Israel today that the Guards with their missile capability will make sure that “nothing will remain” of Israel should it attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Negotiations by world powers with Iran over its illicit nuclear program have come to a halt, even as the regime is stepping up its uranium enrichment program. The IAEA report of Aug. 30 said the Iranian nuclear program is expanding and the regime is stonewalling on inspections of the site where possible nuclear weapons experiments are said to have taken place.
Reports last week also indicated that the U.N. has received significant new intelligence that Iran has moved closer to building a nuclear weapon. The Islamic regime currently has enough enriched uranium for six nuclear bombs if the material is further enriched.

Article I, Sec. 8 determines that the power to declare war resides with Congress, and that no appropriation shall be made longer than two years to raise and support an Army.


Congress has until October 15th, 2012 to make a formal declaration of war against President Assad, for the deaths of nearly 30,000 Syrians with 300,000 refugees for no resolution in nearly two years to resolve these matters of Assad’s own country or the presence of Al Qaeda in Syria. Assad’s refusal to cooperate with the UN and accept Envoy Annan’s offer for security and transition can not relegate the preservation of the sovereignty of Syria to imperil the peace and security of Syrians and the rest of the world. Envoy Brahimi’s visit indicates that the UN resolution was not respected and will never be respected, because it is a secular solution to sectarianism.

However, the Global Counterterrorism Council proposed a mutual agreement to lay down arms for Ashura, in respect of religious considerations with the guarantee of Assad stepping down, but since last Sunday Al Qaeda has derailed those negotiations by laying claim to the aspiration of assassinating Assad and claiming Syria as their own, hijacking the once peaceful Syrian Revolution who wanted Sunni representation in a Shia-controlled government. Reports now indicate that there is an open season of violence in Syria, once a government genocide, Syria has now mushroomed into a civil war, and Syria has been totally engulfed in the tide of war since last week. Damascus and Aleppo are now circular ruins carved into the landscape, and those who did not take calls to flee are returning just to get what is left to leave the region.
Assad has pushed us to this resolution of a default state of war, by being guilty of providing harbor and sanctuary to our enemies Al Qaeda. The petition declares this expiration period to be October 15th, 2012.

Assad has several options to avoid a formal declaration of war by Congress:
  • Cooperate with UN resolution transition or step down voluntarily.
  • Let the petition expire to a default state of war: agree to transition with the help of Morsi, or if Assad sees that as surrender he may negotiate with the United States, as we do not want Assad assassinated for Al Qaeda to claim that as victory, though we have reservations that Assad is a murderer of his own people.
  • Appoint a Successor, so that Syria may be free from interference from UN and allied countries’ pressure upon Assad.

Failure to do any of these things could result in Assad’s death, more turmoil and death for Syrians, a far cry from the vision of reformed government of the Syrian Rebels who have now been permeated and dominated by the presence of an Al Qaeda regime hostile takeover.

Assad failing to act on those options to avoid a declaration of war, will result in a default.

Our military will not be given a blank check on Syria, and we look to close this conflict in Syria without an all-out declaration of war against Syria to preserve its people: to draw a formal conclusion to war and any form of occupation or military aid with our 2014 withdrawal from Afghanistan.

This term of engagement undermining our country, its finances, and security since September 11th, 2001:

Operations require to secure Syria and respond to allied support with Israel includes the following:
  • Use of Tartus ports for our Navy to deliver supplies and secure a safe-zone by sea, air, and land.
  • Use of Libyan airspace in Tripoli.
  • Use of Damascus as a base, to take it back from an Al Qaeda dominated area.
  • Use of Cyprus for back up support: Navy and operational support.

The safe-zone will include the entire Southwestern border from Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea to prevent Al Qaeda aspirations from running missiles of any kind, nuclear or biological weapons, from crossing into a proximity that endangers Israel. Al Qaeda’s purpose for taking Damascus is to use it as a launch pad against Jerusalem.

Al Qaeda will stop at nothing to get nuclear weapons. The particular concern is that since Iran has been fully nuclear since March, that these weapons are in development, five of them, and Al Qaeda will attempt to steal them or use them on Israel instead of Iran using them for defense without a contingency security plan in place by September 20th, 2012. Without an agreement that Iran won’t remain complicit in these matters regarding Hezbollah, where Hezbollah would then transfer or trade these weapons to Al Qaeda to stage an attack on Israel.

Coordination will require Israel’s cooperation and support to maintain stability in negotiations and intelligence sharing.

The conclusion of this declaration will expire on October 15th, 2014.

All appropriations, expenses, and projects are to be reported and analyzed monthly by Congress to the conclusion of this Safe Zone establishment, for its use to stabilize the region and to use the Safe Zone to draw a formal conclusion of both use of the Safe Zone and withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014.

No further appropriations may be made for either after September 30th, 2014. Without thorough re-examination of yearly appropriations for our military and incurred expenses and any and all diplomacy spending in countries with anti-American sentiment.

PAPER DETAILS OBAMA ADMIN’S ALLEGED SECRET NOTE SENT TO IRAN: IF ISRAEL ATTACKS, WE WON’T GET INVOLVED



The Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot published a startling report Monday detailing a message it says was conveyed by the Obama administration – via two European countries – to Iranian officials. The request: if Israel decides to strike Iranian nuclear facilities, the U.S. will not support it and the Islamic Republic should refrain from retaliating on U.S. military installations in the Persian Gulf.
From the report by the well-connected diplomatic correspondent Shimon Schiffer [translated via hard copy by TheBlaze in Israel]:
The message that the U.S. conveyed to Iran via the most sensitive secret channels is unequivocal: if Israel attacks, we won’t stand behind her and we won’t be drawn into war.
In recent days, senior American administration officials turned to their Iranian counterparts via two countries in Europe which act as a back-channel during times of crisis. They made clear to the Iranians that the U.S. does not intend to be sucked into a campaign if Israel decides to strike unilaterally and without advance coordination [with the U.S.], and they said that they expect from Iran that it will not attack strategic American targets in the Persian Gulf. That means, among other things, Army bases, Navy ships and aircraft carriers sailing in the region.

Accompanying the article, the newspaper created a graphic map (pictured above) of various U.S. assets in the region including troops in Afghanistan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia as well as U.S. vessels in the Gulf.

The secret contacts with the Iranians combined with a public statement last week by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey that he won’t be “complicit” in an Israeli attack is being interpreted in Israel as a message from the U.S. that the Jewish state is on its own in stopping Iran from obtaining a doomsday weapon with which to threaten the very existence of Israel. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other Iranian leaders have articulated a desire to wipe Israel off the map. Schiffer writes:
Israeli sources point to the unprecedented low-point in relations between the U.S. and Israeli defense establishments. It appears that the Obama administration decided to warn decision-makers in Israel of the destructive results of an attack without coordinating with the U.S. […]
If true, the report begs the question: If he truly wants to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapons capability, why is President Obama investing in secret contacts with Iran about an Israeli strike aimed at destroying – or at least setting back – the nuclear program? Wouldn’t his efforts be better focused on warning Ahmadinejad of the dire consequences of his apparently accelerated efforts at one day possessing a military nuclear capability?
The Wall Street Journal may have an answer in an editorial this weekend. Though President Obama likes to say he has Israel’s “back,” “his Administration tries to sell to the public a make-believe world in which Iran’s nuclear intentions are potentially peaceful, sanctions are working and diplomacy hasn’t failed after three and half years.”
Also on Monday, The New York Times reported that President Obama is trying to find non-military ways to stall an Israeli attack and restrain Iran’s nuclear march, including naval exercises and new antimissile systems in the Persian Gulf. The Times reports that Obama officials are also considering implementing previously rejected covert activities as well as a new declaration by the president over what would prompt a U.S. military strike.

Western powers and several of their Middle East allies have deployed an enormous naval fleet to the Persian Gulf just days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again suggested that his country may soon launch a preemptive strike against Iran's nuclear facilities.
The fleet includes ships from 25 nations, include three full US carrier groups, each one with a compliment of more aircraft than the entire Iranian air force. Military officials cited by London's Daily Telegraph said the buildup is part of a new annual exercise, but their was no secrecy about the fact that the "enemy" in the exercise is Iran.
There is great fear among Western powers that if Israel strikes Iran's defiant nuclear program, the Islamic Republic will retaliate by trying to close the Straits of Hormuz, a narrow waterway in the Persian Gulf that that sees the daily transit of 18 million barrels of oil, or roughly 35 percent of the world's traded oil. For that oil tap to be shut off would have potentially catastrophic consequences for the economies of the US, Britain, the Euro Zone and Japan, among others.
There is also great concern that Israel is planning to strike Iran before the US presidential election in November in order to force President Barack Obama to militarily support the effort. Obama would likely lose a lot of votes among the pro-Israel American public if he did not help, and Jerusalem is worried that if it waits until after the election and Obama wins, he will be less inclined to provide assistance.
American and European officials have conducted a flurry of meetings with Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak over the past month, ostensibly to pressure Israel against using military force at this time. Obama and other Western leaders continue to insist that there is hope for a diplomatic solution, despite recent reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) suggesting that the past 10 years of diplomatic efforts have only served to accelerate Iran's nuclear program.
"The world tells Israel 'Wait, there’s still time.’ And I say, 'Wait for what? Wait until when?’," Netanyahu said last week. "Those in the international community who refuse to put red lines before Iran don’t have a moral right to place a red light before Israel."
Netanyahu reiterated the urgency of the situation in a series of interviews with the American press over the weekend.
Asked on NBC's Meet the Press program about the possibility of implementing a containment strategy as was done with the Soviet Union after it went nuclear, Netanyahu said the West was underestimating the fanaticism that rules Iran.
"I think Iran is very different, they put their zealotry above survival... I wouldn't rely on their rationality," said the Israeli leader. "It's the same fanaticism that you see storming your embassies today. You want these fanatics to have nuclear weapons?"

14 Moving on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. 15 After the reading from the law and the prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, “Brothers, if you have any message of exhortation for the people, speak it.”
16 So Paul stood up, gestured with his hand and said, “Men of Israel, and you Gentiles who fear God, listen: 17 The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay as foreigners in the country of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18 For a period of about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. 19 After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, [Deuteronomy 7:1] he gave his people their land as an inheritance. 20 All this took about four hundred fifty years. 44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city assembled together to hear the word of the Lord. 45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and they began to contradict what Paul was saying by reviling him.
46 Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously, “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. Today has brought yet more violent protests against diplomatic facilities around the world. In addition to the attacks on U.S. embassies, the German and British embassies in Sudan were also attacked. News reports suggest that the confrontations between security forces and protesters in Tunisia and Egypt have resulted in a number of casualties. Fortunately, it now appears that host nation security forces are increasingly stepping in to protect diplomatic facilities (though far from sufficiently). I have a number of observations.
1.) These protests are not about respect for Islam. The protesters are concerned with what they perceive as the growing reach of modernity into their societies. Put simply, they hate Western liberalism and they hate the United States. In my opinion, Ari Fleischer was right to argue that the protests illustrate the truth of Mitt Romney’s earlier comments in Israel, where he spoke about the importance of social values. Until a society accepts the value of free and open debate, it will face continual outpourings of violent rage. It is notable that there have been few violent protests in the Islamic democracy of Turkey. I detest anti-Muslim sentiment in the U.S., but we must be willing to criticize foreign social currents which tolerate the disgusting behavior that we are currently witnessing around the world. Honest introspection is a critical tool in improving social conditions, and yet in many Islamic societies it is sadly lacking. Where moderate Islam offers comfort and honor, Salafist extremists offer destruction. This should not be a hidden understanding. That the American school in Tunisia was attacked should further illustrate the fact that some very unpleasant individuals and dynamics are engaged in these protests.
Ultimately, the leaders of these rejectionists are not people who value discussion. As Sayyid Qutb put it, “The chasm between Islam and Jahiliyyah is great, and a bridge is not to be built across it so that people on the two sides may mix with each other, but only so that the people of Jahiliyyah may come over to Islam.” This is an ideological tyranny which, devoid of moral value, resides on the imposition of fear.
2.) The Obama administration has handled this crisis badly. I don’t believe that Mitt Romney’s comments on Wednesday were well timed, but they were correct. Faced with violent extremists dedicated to intimidating the most sacred of American values — free speech — we should not be apologizing. Consider the support that our apologies give to regimes that are based on the notion that freedom is evil (like the Iranian regime). Some news reports published today suggest that the Obama administration has been exerting pressure on YouTube to remove the “Innocence of Muslims” film from its website. If this is true, it is a damning indictment of the administration. Even if this film is idiotic, free speech is non-negotiable. Further, if you understand anything about the underpinnings of Sunni Islamist extremism, you also understand that showing weakness to its ideological adherents is a catastrophic error. As I noted yesterday, the U.S. government should be focusing on reinforcing our diplomatic security, educating the Islamic world about our laws regarding free speech and simply affirming that our government had nothing to do with the video’s production or publication. We should also continue to aggressively condemn the violence as absolutely inexcusable and assert that we will take steps to bring the perpetrators to justice. We should not be equivocating or appear to be equivocating.
3.) We should warn foreign states that their access to American aid is contingent upon their effective protection of U.S. diplomatic interests.
4.) I don’t believe that the Democratic Party has enough credibility to criticize Romney for supposedly politicizing this crisis. Sadly, in recent years Democrats have accrued a weak record of foreign policy objectivity. If the Democrats (including President Obama) had had their way, Iraq would now be a black hole of sectarian bloodshed and Assad would be more powerful. It isn’t just past decisions. President Obama has decided to abandon our mission in Afghanistan for the sake of domestic political expediency. This record is anathema to the conduct of a strategic-minded, long-term foreign policy. In contrast, whatever people think of Bush’s decision to invade Iraq, his decision to “stay the course” (against huge domestic pressure) saved Iraq from the abyss while also extricating America from a truly catastrophic loss to al Qaida. Bush’s wisdom has merit still. Shortly after 9/11, the former president eloquently warned America about the objectives of individuals like those who are currently attacking our embassies.
The incumbent president should listen to Bush’s words.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut have started to destroy classified material as a security precaution amid anti-American protests in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East and North Africa.
A State Department status report obtained Monday by The Associated Press said the Beirut embassy had "reviewed its emergency procedures and is beginning to destroy classified holdings." It also said that local Lebanese employees were sent home early due to protests by the militant Shiite group Hezbollah over an anti-Muslim film produced in the U.S.
In Washington, a State Department official said there was no imminent threat to the heavily fortified Beirut embassy, which is about an hour away from where the nearest demonstration is planned.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss security procedures, said the decision to "reduce classified holdings" was routine and made by embassy staff.
Protesters have breached the walls or compounds of several U.S. diplomatic missions, including the consulate in Benghazi, Libya where the ambassador and three other Americans were killed, Cairo and Tunis since last Tuesday.
After Tuesday's incidents, the State Department ordered all U.S. embassies and consulates around the world to review their security postures. As a result, a number of missions decided to destroy classified material, the official said. It was not immediately clear which other missions besides the one in Beirut had taken that step.
The official stressed it was normal under circumstances such as those of last week for embassies to reduce the amount of classified material that they hold. Classified documents are also routinely culled as part of normal embassy operations.
Earlier Monday, the State Department renewed its warning to U.S. citizens to "avoid all travel to Lebanon because of current safety and security concerns. " It said U.S. citizens "living and working in Lebanon should understand that they accept risks in remaining and should carefully consider those risks."
The new alert, which superseded a May 8 warning, said the potential for a "spontaneous upsurge in violence remains" in Lebanon and that Lebanese authorities are not able to guarantee protection if violence erupts quickly.
The warning also noted that the Fulbright and the English Language Fellow programs that gave grants to American scholars to live and work in Lebanon during the academic year have been suspended "because of the deteriorating security situation and the increased possibility of attacks against U.S. citizens in Lebanon."

Ruined lives. Lost fortunes. Federal crimes. Scientology poses as a religion but really is a ruthless global scam -- and aiming for the mainstream

By all appearances, Noah Lottick of Kingston, Pa., had been a normal, happy 24-year-old who was looking for his place in the world. On the day last June when his parents drove to New York City to obtain his body, they were nearly catatonic with grief.This young Russian-studies scholar had jumped from a 10th-floor window of the Milford Plaza Hotel and bounced off the hood of a stretch limousine. When the police arrived, his fingers were still clutching $171 in cash, virtually the only money he hadn't turned over to the Church of Scientology, the self-help "philosophy" group he had discovered just seven months earlier.
His death inspired his father Edward, a physician, to start his own investigation of the church. "We thought Scientology was something like Dale Carnegie," Lottick says. "I now believe it's a school for psychopaths." Their so-called therapies are manipulations. They take the best and the brightest people and destroy them." The Lotticks want to sue the church for contributing to their son's death, but the prospect has them frightened. For nearly 40 years, the big business of Scientology has shielded itself exquisitely behind the First Amendment as well as a battery of high-priced criminal lawyers and shady private detectives.
The Church of Scientology, started by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard to "clear" people of unhappiness, portrays itself as a religion. In reality the church is a hugely profitable global racket that survives by intimidating members and critics in a Mafia-like manner. At times during the past decade, prosecutions against Scientology seemed to be curbing its menace. Eleven top Scientologists, including Hubbard's wife, were sent to prison in the early 1980s for infiltrating, burglarizing and wiretapping more than 100 private and government agencies in attempts to block their investigations. In recent years hundreds of longtime Scientology adherents -- many charging that they were mentally of physically abused -- have quit the church and criticized it at their own risk. Some have sued the church and won; others have settled for amounts in excess of $500,000. In various cases judges have labeled the church "schizophrenic and paranoid" and "corrupt, sinister and dangerous."
Yet the outrage and litigation have failed to squelch Scientology. The group, which boasts 700 centers in 65 countries, threatens to become more insidious and pervasive than ever. Scientology is trying to go mainstream, a strategy that has sparked a renewed law- enforcement campaign against the church. Many of the group's followers have been accused of committing financial scams, while the church is busy attracting the unwary through a wide array of front groups in such businesses as publishing, consulting, health care and even remedial education.
In Hollywood, Scientology has assembled a star-studded roster of followers by aggressively recruiting and regally pampering them at the church's "Celebrity Centers," a chain of clubhouses that offer expensive counseling and career guidance. Adherents include screen idols Tom Cruise and John Travolta, actresses Kirstie Alley, Mimi Rogers, and Anne Archer, Palm Springs mayor and performer Sonny Bono, jazzman Chick Corea and even Nancy Cartwright, the voice of cartoon star Bart Simpson. Rank-and-file members, however, are dealt a less glamorous Scientology.
According to the Cult Awareness Network, whose 23 chapters monitor more than 200 "mind control" cults, no group prompts more telephone pleas for help than does Scientology. Says Cynthia Kisser, the network's Chicago-based executive director: "Scientology is quite likely the most ruthless, the most classically terroristic, the most litigious and the most lucrative cult the country has ever seen. No cult extracts more money from its members." [Note: since publication of this article, the Cult Awareness Network has been taken over by Scientology. Do not contact them!] Agrees Vicki Aznaran, who was one of Scientology's six key leaders until she bolted from the church in 1987: "This is a criminal organization, day in and day out. It makes Jim and Tammy [Bakker] look like kindergarten." To explore Scientology's reach, TIME conducted more than 150 interviews and reviewed hundreds of court records and internal Scientology documents. Church officials refused to be interviewed. The investigation paints a picture of a depraved yet thriving enterprise. Most cults fail to outlast their founder, but Scientology has prospered since Hubbard's death in 1986. In a court filing, one of the cult's many entities -- the Church of Spiritual Technology -- listed $503 million in income just for 1987. High-level defectors say the parent organization has squirreled away an estimated $400 million in bank accounts in Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Cyprus. Scientology probably has about 50,000 active members, far fewer than the 8 million the group claims. But in one sense, that inflated figure rings true: millions of people have been affected in one way or another by Hubbard's bizarre creation.Scientology is now run by David Miscavige, 31, a high school dropout and second-generation church member. Defectors describe him as cunning, ruthless and so paranoid about perceived enemies that he kept plastic wrap over his glass of water. His obsession is to obtain credibility for Scientology in the 1990s. Among other tactics, the group:
  • Retains public relation powerhouse Hill and Knowlton to help shed the church's fringe-group image.
  • Joined such household names as Sony and Pepsi as a main sponsor of Ted Turner's Goodwill Games.
  • Buys massive quantities of its own books from retail stores to propel the titles onto best-seller lists.
  • Runs full-page ads in such publications as Newsweek and Business Week that call Scientology a "philosophy," along with a plethora of TV ads touting the group's books.
  • Recruits wealthy and respectable professionals through a web of consulting groups that typically hide their ties to Scientology.


The founder of this enterprise was part storyteller, part flimflam man. Born In Nebraska in 1911, Hubbard served in the Navy during World War II and soon afterward complained to the Veterans Administration about his "suicidal inclinations" and his "seriously affected" mind. Nevertheless, Hubbard was a moderately successful writer of pulp science fiction. Years later, church brochures described him falsely as an "extensively decorated" World War II hero who was crippled and blinded in action, twice pronounced dead and miraculously cured through Scientology. Hubbard's "doctorate" from "Sequoia University" was a fake mall-order degree. In a I984 case in which the church sued a Hubbard biographical researcher, a California judge concluded that its founder was "a pathological liar."
Hubbard wrote one of Scientology's sacred texts, Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, in 1950. In it he introduced a crude psychotherapeutic technique he called "auditing." He also created a simplified lie detector (called an "E-meter") that was designed to measure electrical changes In the skin while subjects discussed intimate details of their past. Hubbard argued that unhappiness sprang from mental aberrations (or "engrams") caused by early traumas. Counseling sessions with the E-meter, he claimed, could knock out the engrams, cure blindness and even improve a person's intelligence and appearance.
Hubbard kept adding steps, each more costly, for his followers to climb. In the 1960s the guru decreed that humans are made of clusters of spirits (or "thetans") who were banished to earth some 75 million years ago by a cruel galactic ruler named Xenu. Naturally, those thetans had to be audited.
An Internal Revenue Service ruling in 1967 stripped Scientology's mother church of its tax-exempt status. A federal court ruled in 1971 that Hubbard's medical claims were bogus and that E-meter auditing could no longer be called a scientific treatment. Hubbard responded by going fully religious, seeking First Amendment protection for Scien- tology's strange rites. His counselors started sporting clerical collars. Chapels were built, franchises became "missions," fees became "fixed donations," and Hubbard's comic-book cosmology became "sacred scriptures.'
During the early 1970s, the IRS conducted its own auditing sessions and proved that Hubbard was skimming millions of dollars from the church, laundering the money through dummy corporations in Panama and stashing it in Swiss bank accounts. Moreover, church members stole IRS documents, filed false tax returns and harassed the agency's employees. By late 1985, with high-level defectors accusing Hubbard of having stolen as much as S200 million from the church, the IRS was seeking an indictment of Hubbard for tax fraud. Scientology members "worked day and night" shredding documents the IRS sought, according to defector Aznaran, who took part in the scheme. Hubbard, who had been in hiding for five years, died before the criminal case could be prosecuted.

Today the church invents costly new services with all the zeal of its founder. Scientology doctrine warns that even adherents who are "cleared" of engrams face grave spiritual dangers unless they are pushed to higher and more expensive levels. According to the church's latest price list, recruits -- "raw meat," as Hubbard called them -- take auditing sessions that cost as much as $1,000 an hour, or $12,500 for a 12 1/2-hour "intensive."



Psychiatrists say these sessions can produce a drugged-like, mind-controlled euphoria that keeps customers coming back for more. To pay their fees, newcomers can earn commissions by recruiting new mem- bers, become auditors themselves (Miscavige did so at age 12), or join the church staff and receive free counseling in exchange for what their written contracts describe as a "billion years" of labor. "Make sure that lots of bodies move through the shop," implored Hubbard in one of his bulletins to officials. "Make money. Make more money. Make others produce so as to make money . . . However you get them in or why, just do it."Harriet Baker learned the hard way about Scientology's business of selling religion. When Baker, 73, lost her husband to cancer, a Scientologist turned up at her Los Angeles home peddling a $1,300 auditing package to cure her grief. Some $15,000 later, the Scientologists discovered that her house was debt free. They arranged a $45,000 mortgage, which they pressured her to tap for more auditing until Baker's children helped their mother snap out of her daze. Last June, Baker demanded a $27,000 refund for unused services, prompting two cult members to show up at her door unannounced with an E-meter to interrogate her. Baker never got the money and, financially strapped, was forced to sell her house in September.
Before Noah Lottick killed himself, he had paid more than $5,000 for church counseling. His behavior had also become strange. He once remarked to his parents that his Scientology mentors could actually read minds. When his father suffered a major heart attack, Noah insisted that it was purely psychosomatic. Five days before he jumped, Noah burst into his parents' home and demanded to know why they were spreading "false rumors" about him -- a delusion that finally prompted his father to call a psychiatrist.
It was too late. "From Noah's friends at Dianetics" read the card that accompanied a bouquet of flowers at Lottick's funeral. Yet no Scientology staff members bothered to show up. A week earlier, local church officials had given Lottick's parents a red-carpet tour of their center. A cult leader told Noah's parents that their son had been at the church just hours before he disappeared -- but the church denied this story as soon as the body was identified. True to form, the cult even haggled with the Lotticks over $3,000 their son had paid for services he never used, insisting that Noah had intended it as a "donation."
The church has invented hundreds of goods and services for which members are urged to give "donations." Are you having trouble "moving swiftly up the Bridge" -- that is, advancing up the stepladder of en- lightenment? Then you can have your case reviewed for a mere $1,250 "donation." Want to know "why a thetan hangs on to the physical universe?" Try 52 of Hubbard's tape-recorded speeches from 1952, titled "Ron's Philadelphia Doctorate Course Lectures," for $2,525. Next: nine other series of the same sort. For the collector, gold-and-leather-bound editions of 22 of Hubbard's books (and bookends) on subjects ranging from Scientology ethics to radiation can be had for just $1,900.
To gain influence and lure richer, more sophisticated followers, Scientology has lately resorted to a wide array of front groups and financial scams. Among them:
  • CONSULTING. Sterling Management Systems, formed in 1983, has been ranked in recent years by Inc. magazine as one of America's fastest-growing private companies (estimated 1988 revenues: $20 mil- lion). Sterling regularly mails a free newsletter to more than 300,000 health-care professionals, mostly dentists, promising to increase their incomes dramatically. The firm offers seminars and courses that typically cost $10,OOO. But Sterling's true aim is to hook customers for Scientology. "The church has a rotten product, so they package it as something else," says Peter Georgiades, a Pittsburgh attorney who represents Sterling victims. "It's a kind of bait and switch." Sterling's founder, dentist Gregory Hughes is now under investigation by California's Board of Dental Examiners for incompetence. Nine lawsuits are pending against him for malpractice (seven others have been settled), mostly for orthodontic work on children.
  • Many dentists who have unwittingly been drawn into the cult are filing or threatening lawsuits as well. Dentist Robert Geary of Medina, Ohio, who entered a Sterling seminar in 1988, endured "the most extreme high-pressure sales tactics I have ever faced." Sterling officials told Geary, 45, that their firm was not linked to Scientology, he says. but Geary claims they eventually convinced him that he and his wife Dorothy had personal problems that required auditing. Over five months, the Gearys say, they spent $130,000 for services, plus $50,000 for "gold-embossed, investment-grade" books signed by Hubbard. Geary contends that Scientologists not only called his bank to increase his credit card limit but also forged his signature on a $20,000 loan application. "It was insane," he recalls. "I couldn't even get an accounting from them of what I was paying for." At one point, the Gearys claim, Scientologists held Dorothy hostage for two weeks in a mountain cabin, after which she was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown.
  • Last October, Sterling broke some bad news to another dentist, Glover Rowe of Gadsden, Ala., and his wife Dee. Tests showed that unless they signed up for auditing Glover's practice would fail, and Dee would someday abuse their child. The next month the Rowes flew to Glendale, Calif., where they shuttled daily from a local hotel to a Dianetics center. "We thought they were brilliant people because they seemed to know so much about us," recalls Dee. "Then we realized our hotel room must have been bugged." After bolting from the center, $23,000 poorer, the Rowes say, they were chased repeatedly by Scientologists on foot and in cars. Dentists aren't the only once at risk. Scientology also makes pitches to chiropractors, podiatrists and veterinarians.
  • PUBLIC INFLUENCE. One front, the Way to Happiness Foundation, has distributed to children in thousands of the nation's public schools more than 3.5 million copies of a booklet Hubbard wrote on morality. The church calls the scheme "the largest dissemination project in Scientology history." Applied Scholastics is the name of still another front, which is attempting to install a Hubbard tutorial program in public schools, primarily those populated by minorities. The group also plans a 1,000 acre campus, where it will train educators to teach various Hubbard methods. The disingenuously named Citizens Commission on Human Rights is a Scientology group at war with psychiatry, its primary competitor. The commission typically issues reports aimed at discrediting particular psychiatrists and the field in general. The CCHR is also behind an all-out war against Eli Lilly, the maker of Prozac, the nation's top-selling antidepression drug. Despite scant evidence, the group's members -- who call themselves "psychbusters" -- claim that Prozac drives people to murder or suicide. Through mass mailings, appearances on talk shows and heavy lobbying, CCHR has hurt drug sales and helped spark dozens of lawsuits against Lilly.
  • Another Scientology linked group, the Concerned Businessmen's Association of America, holds antidrug contests and awards $5,000 grants to schools as a way to recruit students and curry favor with education officials. West Virginia Senator John D. Rockefeller IV unwittingly commended the CBAA in 1987 on the Senate floor. Last August author Alex Haley was the keynote speaker at its annual awards banquet in Los Angeles. Says Haley: "I didn't know much about that group going in. I'm a Methodist." Ignorance about Scientology can be embarrassing: two months ago, Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, noting that Scientology's founder "has solved the aberrations of the human mind," proclaimed March 13 "L. Ron Hubbard Day." He rescinded the proclamation in late March, once he Iearned who Hubbard really was.
  • HEALTH CARE. HealthMed, a chain of clinics run by Scientologists, promotes a grueling and excessive system of saunas, exercise and vitamins designed by Hubbard to purify the body. Experts denounce the regime as quackery and potentially harmful, yet HealthMed solicits unions and public agencies for contracts. The chain is plugged heavily in a new book, Diet for a Poisoned Planet, by journalist David Steinman, who concludes that scores of common foods (among them: peanuts, bluefish, peaches and cottage cheese) are dangerous.
  • Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop labeled the book "trash," and the Food and Drug Administration issued a paper in October that claims Steinman distorts his facts. "HealthMed is a gateway to Scientology, and Steinman's book is a sorting mechanism," says physician William Jarvis, who is head of the National Council Against Health Fraud. Steinman, who describes Hubbard favorably as a "researcher," denies any ties to the church and contends, "HealthMed has no affiliation that I know of with Scientology."
  • DRUG TREATMENT. Hubbard's purification treatments are the mainstay of Narconon, a Scientology-run chain of 33 alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers -- some in prisons under the name "Criminon" -- in 12 countries. Narconon, a classic vehicle for drawing addicts into the cult, now plans to open what it calls the world's largest treatment center, a 1,400-bed facility on an Indian reservation near Newkirk, Okla. (pop. 2,400. At a 1989 ceremony in Newkirk, the As- sociation for Better Living and Education presented Narconon a check for $200,000 and a study praising its work. The association turned out to be part of Scientology itself. Today the town is battling to keep out the cult, which has fought back through such tactics as sending private detectives to snoop on the mayor and the local newspaper publisher.
  • FINANCIAL SCAMS. Three Florida Scientologists, including Ronald Bernstein, a big contributor to the church's international "war chest," pleaded guilty in March to using their rare-coin dealership as a money laundry. Other notorious activities by Scientologists include making the shady Vancouver stock exchange even shadier (see box) and plotting to plant operatives in the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and Export-Import Bank of the U.S. The alleged purpose of this scheme: to gain inside information on which countries are going to be denied credit so that Scientology-linked traders can make illicit profits by taking "short" positions in those countries' currencies.
  • In the stock market the practice of "shorting" involves borrowing shares of publicly traded companies in the hope that the price will go down before the stocks must be bought on the market and returned to the lender. The Feshbach brothers of Palo Alto, Calif. -- Kurt, Joseph and Matthew - have become the leading short sellers in the U.S., with more than $500 million under management. The Feshbachs command a staff of about 60 employees and claim to have earned better returns than the Dow Jones industrial average for most of the 1980s. And, they say, they owe it all to the teachings of Scientology, whose "war chest" has received more than $1 million from the family.
  • The Feshbachs also embrace the church's tactics; the brothers are the terrors of the stock exchanges. In congressional hearings in 1989, the heads of several companies claimed that Feshbach operatives have spread false information to government agencies and posed in various guises -- such as a Securities and Exchange Commission official -- in an effort to discredit their companies and drive the stocks down. Michael Russell, who ran a chain of business journals, testified that a Feshbach employee called his bankers and interfered with his loans. Sometimes the Feshbachs send private detectives to dig up dirt on firms, which is then shared with business reporters, brokers and fund managers.
  • The Feshbachs, who wear jackets bearing the slogan "stock busters," insist they run a clean shop. But as part of a current probe into possible insider stock trading, federal officials are reportedly investigating whether the Feshbachs received confidential information from FDA employees. The brothers seem aligned with Scientology's war on psychiatry and medicine: many of their targets are health and bio- technology firms. ""Legitimate short selling performs a public service by deflating hyped stocks," says Robert Flaherty, the editor of Equities magazine and a harsh critic of the brothers. "But the Feshbachs have damaged scores of good start-ups."
  • Occasionally a Scientologist's business antics land him in jail. Last August a former devotee named Steven Fishman began serving a five-year prison term in Florida. His crime: stealing blank stock-confirmation slips from his employer, a major brokerage house, to use as proof that he owned stock entitling him to join dozens of successful class-action lawsuits. Fishman made roughly $1 million this way from 1983 to 1988 and spent as much as 30% of the loot on Scientology books and tapes.
  • Scientology denies any tie to the Fishman scam, a claim strongly disputed by both Fishman and his longtime psychiatrist, Uwe Geertz, a prominent Florida hypnotist. Both men claim that when arrested, Fishman was ordered by the church to kill Geertz and then do an "EOC," or end of cycle, which is church jargon for suicide.
  • BOOK PUBLISHING. Scientology mischiefmaking has even moved to the book industry. Since 1985 at least a dozen Hubbard books, printed by a church company, have made best-seller lists. They range from a 5,000-page sci-fi decology (Black Genesis, The Enemy Within, An Alien Affair) to the 40-year-old Dianetics. In 1988 the trade publication Publishers Weekly awarded the dead author a plaque commemorating the appearance of Dianetics on its best-seller list for 100 consecutive weeks.
  • Critics pan most of Hubbard's books as unreadable, while defectors claim that church insiders are sometimes the real authors. Even so, Scientology has sent out armies of its followers to buy the group's books at such major chains as B. Dalton's and Waldenbooks to sustain the illusion of a best-selling author. A former Dalton's manager says that some books arrived in his store with the chain's price stickers already on them, suggesting that copies are being recycled. Scientology claims that sales of Hubbard books now top 90 million worldwide. The scheme, set up to gain converts and credibility, is coupled with a radio and TV advertising campaign virtually un- paralleled in the book industry.
Scientology devotes vast resources to squelching its critics. Since 1986 Hubbard and his church have been the subject of four unfriendly books, all released by small yet courageous publishers. In each case, the writers have been badgered and heavily sued. One of Hubbard's policies was that all perceived enemies are "fair game" and subject to being "tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed." Those who criticize the church journalists, doctors, lawyers and even judges often find themselves engulfed in litigation, stalked by private eyes, framed for fictional crimes, beaten up or threatened with death. Psychologist Margaret Singer, 69, an outspoken Scientology critic and professor at the University of California, Berkeley, now travels regularly under an assumed name to avoid harassment.
After the Los Angeles Times published a negative series on the church last summer, Scientologists spent an estimated $1 million to plaster the reporters' names on hundreds of billboards and bus placards across the city. Above their names were quotations taken out of context to portray the church in a positive light.
The church's most fearsome advocates are its lawyers. Hubbard warned his followers in writing to "beware of attorneys who tell you not to sue . . . the purpose of the suit is to harass and discourage rather than to win." Result: Scientology has brought hundreds of suits against its perceived enemies and today pays an estimated $20 million annually to more than 100 lawyers.
One legal goal of Scientology is to bankrupt the opposition or bury it under paper. The church has 71 active lawsuits against the IRS alone. One of them, Miscavige vs. IRS, has required the U.S. to pro- duce an index of 52,000 pages of documents. Boston attorney Michael Flynn, who helped Scientology victims from 1979 to 1987, personally endured 14 frivolous lawsuits, all of them dismissed. Another lawyer, Joseph Yanny, believes the church "has so subverted justice and the judicial system that it should be barred from seeking equity in any court." He should know: Yanny represented the cult until 1987, when, he says, he was asked to help church officials steal medical records to blackmail an opposing attorney (who was allegedly beaten up instead). Since Yanny quit representing the church, he has been the target of death threats, burglaries, lawsuits and other harassment.
Scientology's critics contend that the U.S. needs to crack down on the church in a major, organized way. "I want to know, Where is our government?" demands Toby Plevin, a Los Angeles attorney who handles victims. "It shouldn't be left to private litigators, because God knows most of us are afraid to get involved." But law-enforcement agents are also wary. "Every investigator is very cautious, walking on eggshells when it comes to the church," says a Florida police detective who has tracked the cult since 1988. "It will take a federal effort with lots of money and manpower."
So far the agency giving Scientology the most grief is the IRS, whose officials have implied that Hubbard's successors may be looting the church's coffers. Since 1988, when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the revocation of the cult's tax-exempt status, a massive IRS probe of church centers across the country has been under way. An IRS agent, Marcus Owens, has estimated that thousands of IRS employees have been involved. Another agent, in an internal IRS memorandum, spoke hopefully of the "ultimate disintegration" of the church. A small but helpful beacon shone last June when a federal appeals court ruled that two cassette tapes featuring conversations between church officials and their lawyers are evidence of a plan to commit "future frauds" against the IRS.
The IRS and FBI have been debriefing Scientology defectors for the past three years, in part to gain evidence for a major racketeering case that appears to have stalled last summer. Federal agents complain that the Justice Department is unwilling to spend the money needed to endure a drawn-out war with Scientology or to fend off the cult's notorious jihads against individual agents. "In my opinion the church has one of the most effective intelligence operations in the U.S., rivaling even that of the FBI," says Ted Gunderson, a former head of the FBI's Los Angeles office.
Foreign governments have been moving even more vigorously against the organization. In Canada the church and nine of its members will be tried in June on charges of stealing government documents (many of them retrieved in an enormous police raid of the church's Toronto headquarters). Scientology proposed to give $1 million to the needy if the case was dropped, but Canada spurned the offer. Since 1986 authorities in France, Spain and Italy have raided more than 50 Scien- tology centers. Pending charges against more than 100 of its overseas church members include fraud, extortion, capital flight, coercion, illegally practicing medicine and taking advantage of mentally incapacitated people. In Germany last month, leading politicians accused the cult of trying to infiltrate a major party as well as launching an immense recruitment drive in the east.
Sometimes even the church's biggest zealots can use a little protection. Screen star Travolta, 37, has long served as an unofficial Scientology spokesman, even though he told a magazine in 1983 that he was opposed to the church's management. High-level defectors claim that Travolta has long feared that if he defected, details of his sexual life would be made public. "He felt pretty intimidated about this getting out and told me so," recalls William Franks, the church's former chairman of the board. "There were no outright threats made, but it was implicit. If you leave, they immediately start digging up everything." Franks was driven out in 1981 after attempting to reform the church.
The church's former head of security, Richard Aznaran, recalls Scientology ringleader Miscavige repeatedly joking to staffers about Travolta's allegedly promiscuous homosexual behavior. At this point any threat to expose Travolta seems superfluous: last May a male porn star collected $100,000 from a tabloid for an account of his alleged two-year liaison with the celebrity. Travolta refuses to comment, and in December his lawyer dismissed questions about the subject as "bizarre." Two weeks later, Travolta announced that he was getting married to actress Kelly Preston, a fellow Scientologist.
Shortly after Hubbard's death the church retained Trout & Ries, a respected, Connecticut-based firm of marketing consultants, to help boost its public image. "We were brutally honest," says Jack Trout. "We advised them to clean up their act, stop with the controversy and even to stop being a church. They didn't want to hear that." Instead, Scientology hired one of the country's largest p.r. outfits, Hill and Knowlton, whose executives refuse to discuss the lucrative relationship. "Hill and Knowlton must feel that these guys are not totally off the wall," says Trout. "Unless it's just for the money." One of Scientology's main strategies is to keep advancing the tired argument that the church is being "persecuted" by antireligionists. It is supported in that position by the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Council of Churches. But in the end, money is what Scientology is all about. As long as the organization's opponents and victims are successfully squelched, Scientology's managers and lawyers will keep pocketing millions of dollars by helping it achieve its ends.

Benghazi, Libya (CNN) -- FBI investigators probing the U.S. Consulate killings in Libya put off a visit there until conditions in the volatile region are safer.
Agents hoped to arrive on Saturday but reconsidered because of the instability sweeping across Libya and throughout the region, federal law enforcement officials said.
One source said there's nothing to be gained by putting additional people in harm's way when the situation on the ground remains volatile. It's hard to say when the situation will become stable enough for the FBI to visit, the officials said.

Agents are now conducting interviews with witnesses outside the country, including people who've been evacuated.
Militants on Tuesday, the anniversary the September 11, 2001, attacks, stormed the consulate in Benghazi, killingU.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.
Libyan officials believe it was a planned assault that used a protest over a film mocking the Prophet Mohammed as a diversion. Rage over the film across the Muslim world has made the region dangerous terrain for Westerners.
The federal sources say the crime scene at the consulate is far from pristine. They say many people, including journalists, have been inside the charred remains of the compound, but they insist evidence can still be gathered.
Don Borelli, a retired FBI agent, said the bureau will want to keep a low footprint but create a team big enough to get the job done. Agents must consider security and logistical issues, he said.
"The more people you bring over there, the more people you have to worry about," he told CNN.
Libya is cooperating "with the U.S. side now, both here and in Benghazi," Monem Elyaseer, the aide to the head of Libya's ruling General National Congress, told CNN on Saturday.
"Things are moving very, very well," Muhammad Alkari, spokesman for the prime minister's office, told CNN.
News of the investigation came a day after the remains of Stevens and the three others were returned to the United States, where President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were present for the transfer of the flag-draped caskets from an airport hangar to four hearses.
Funeral arrangements for the four men were pending Saturday.
Four Libyans have been arrested in connection with Tuesday's assault on the consulate, though they were not said to be directly tied to the attack.
The identities of the four suspects have not been released, though Elyaseer said "there is an active interrogation of suspects at this time."
"You can expect something to be announced soon about arrests," he said.
The Libyan government now believes the suspects are part of one of the many armed extremist groups operating especially in the eastern part of the country and Benghazi itself, Mohammed Al-Megaryef, the head of Libya's ruling General National Congress, told CNN on Friday.
Authorities believe the attack was planned and deliberately carried out to inflict maximum damage on key Western interests, particularly the United States, he said.
U.S. officials, however, have said they have no firm evidence that the attack was premeditated.
The Libyan government believes the attack was intended to drive a wedge between Americans and Libyans.
"We are doing our best to avoid further attacks," al-Megaryef said.
But he acknowledged that authorities had little capacity to defend against the powerful extremist groups.
Given what is known about al Qaeda in Libya, U.S. intelligence officials believe it is unlikely that an al Qaeda-affiliated group was behind the attack, a U.S. intelligence official told CNN on condition of anonymity. The official was not authorized to release the information.
The Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula issued a statement Friday suggesting that the recent killing of militant Abu Yahya al-Libi could have prompted people "to take revenge upon those who make light of our religion and attack our prophet."
Al-Libi was the No. 2 man of the so-called core al Qaeda along the Afghan and Pakistan border. A CIA drone strike in Pakistan killed him in June.
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula -- which did not claim involvement in the Libya attack -- is known as a substantial threat both in Yemen and beyond its borders.
The United States deployed warships and surveillance drones in its hunt for the killers of the diplomatic staffers, and a contingent of 50 Marines has arrived to boost the security of Americans in the country.
The United States and Libya have embarked on a new relationship since rebels toppled longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year.
U.S. warplanes participated in the NATO effort that helped the Benghazi-based rebellion against Gadhafi, who was wanted by the International Criminal Court for charges of crimes against humanity before he was killed in October.

The Rasmussen Reports Daily Tracking Poll of the presidential race released today shows President Obama leading Mitt Romney 46 percent to 44 percent. That margin is within the poll's margin of error and therefore, the race by that result is statistically tied. It appears that Romney gained four percent after the Republican convention andObama has gained two or three of that percent back after the Democratic National Convention this past week.
The state polls and race for electoral votes shows to be unchanged from the last GOP2112 analysis of the electoral vote race published here August 25, 2012. Not a single state has moved into a different category since then, and Romney maintains the electoral vote lead of 317 to 179 over Obama with 42 electoral votes from Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New Mexico and Oregon remaining in toss-up status. The map above shows which ways the states are leaning in this presidential race.
Here is information and analysis on some of the key swing states:
New Hampshire: The RCP average favor Obama by only 3.5 percent with both candidates well under 50 percent. The latest PPP survey is an outlier, and the average of the other three polls listed would place Obama at 47.3 percent to Romney at 44.7 percent. Most undecided voters will break for Obama and New Hampshire will return to its historic pattern of voting for the Republican nominee. New Hampshire leans Republican.
New Jersey: This projection has suggested the last few times that New Jersey might be in play and the latest Quinnipiac survey shows Obama's lead in NJ falling to only seven percent. Romney has risen to 44 percent in that poll. If the next credible poll of New Jersey moves Romney at least up to 45 percent and Obama below 50 percent, this state will move to toss-up. Right now, it is leaning Democrat.
Pennsylvania: RCP is showing two newspaper commissioned polls that are not held in high esteem by this analysis and a Franklin and Marshall College poll showing Obama leading 47 percent to 42 percent over Mitt Romney. The survey appears to modestly over-sample Democratic voters, therefore the state of the race between Romney and Obama in this state is probably still quite close. Until further evidence warrants concluding otherwise, Pennsylvania is a toss-up.
Florida: Florida is a key state where skewed media polls and those who wish to believe them rather than know how the race actually stands, cause many to buy into the perception that Obama is running stronger than he is. The RCP average has Obama at 47.3 percent ot Romney at 46.7 percent. This average includes two blatantly skewed media polls and that of the Democrat-leaning firm Public Policy Polling. The remaining three polls, if averaged, would show a Romney lead of 47.0 percent to 45.7 percent. Florida leans Republican.
Virginia: The RCP average is 47.3 percent Obama to 46.7 Romney, which includes the PPP poll showing Obama leading by five percent, which is clearly an outlier. Factoring that out, the other two surveys average to Romney a 1.5 percent lead. Virginia remains in the category of leaning Republican.
Ohio: Despite including two polls that over-sample Democrats and feature skewed results (CBS/NYT/Quinnipiac and Ohio Poll/Univ. of Cin.), the RCP average shows Obama barely leading the state by a 46.2 percent to 45.5 percent margin. The remaining polls would indicate a Romney lead of 45.8 percent to 44.5 percent. Both campaigns are focusing heavily on Ohio and it will be close but Romney will win it by a few percent. Ohio leans Republican.
Colorado: Obama leads only 2.3 percent in the RCP average and the most recent survey of the state is one by Democrat-leaning PPP which shows Obama leading by 3 percent. Odds after if that polls shows a 3 percent lead for Obama, the state is likely tied at best. Colorado leans Republican.
Both sides hold their national conventions and get small but likely to fade away “bounces” in the polls and the race remains entirely unchanged. Barack Obama has all the support he's going to get and has to hope to higher turnout among the groups and constituencies among the electorate that are more likely to vote for him. Romney has yet to close the sale for the few remaining undecided voters and has a huge financial advantage with which to purchase advertising with which to do that. The Republican turnout organization nationally should give the GOP a key advantage which will win the White House and a majority in the U.S. Senate on election day.

In accordance with current federal immigration laws and standards of citizenship, it has been brought to our attention routinely that President Barack Obama is not authentically a citizen of the United States, but of Kenyan birth. Even Africa has responded on the matter, sufficing to say that they knew about Obama’s ways before we did, to misrepresent himself and motives for campaigns, and Africa cites his cousin Raila Odigna’s election issues and violence. Africa also complains that Obama has recently dumped $60 million taxpayer dollars into an abortion clinic in Uganda, for idol worship purposes of child sacrifice. Obama entered into a contract with the goddess Mami Wata, titled H.R. 4872, for the mass federal funding of abortions, and he justified this by saying the abortions would pay for themselves with the money made off of carcass harvesting, with the bodies being sold for stem cell research.

Therefore, with our moral and lawful objections to Obama’s Presidency and the Impeachment Decree being drafted presently, we must uphold and enforce current federal laws, up to applicable fines, imprisonment, and deportation. It is difficult for America to be respected when the President refuses to honor the laws he is sworn to uphold.

Funding has been a challenge, and the laissez-faire policies of former Speaker Newt Gingrich contributed to Georgia alone losing $20 million dollars in immigration fees and lost tax revenue of 2-3% over the past decade. Amnesty is not an option, with the money being left unpaid.

Additionally, current laws in Mexico that respect personal use amounts of illegal drugs are different than American laws which are outdated on drug policy reforms, according to current Mexico law and Canadian studies. Therefore, the role of state governments is to report to the federal government agencies handling immigration and deportation matters, or ICE. Restricting state laws meant to comply with existing federal laws is not only ludicrous, but shows a blatant disregard for the citizens who do pay taxes.

While Georgia has lost over $20 million dollars in immigration fees and 2-3% in tax revenue annually, this is not necessarily an issue of Amnesty or naturalization that Obama has politicized for votes and his own lack of citizenship; it is an issue of willful law breaking, tax evasion, and a strained system resultant from ineffective coordination of state government costs with respect to federal enforcement that is both cooperative, collaborative, and truly diplomatic in our relationship to Mexico.

States may sue the federal government for the lost immigration fees, or they may levy the appropriate fines upon those who have not registered for citizenship or upon those who do not have VISAS: usually the financial burden is enough to encourage people to go back to Mexico without us having to foot the cost of imprisonment or for a one-way deportation.

Now, based on arrests and the costs of processing those arrests: the message is simple... either comply with the federal immigration program in ENTIRETY and PAY UP, OR GET OUT!! It is up to each state to report these findings of judicial costs, to be monitored for waste, with this Act. The Southern States have six months to analyze this, and report to Congress by 6-1-2012 their findings for Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, who all share an immigration burden outside lawful federal requirements, in varying proportions, but especially Texas and Arizona who are victimized by cartel violence with California having a 15% unemployment rate, and the federal government will have to take this into consideration for states adhering to budgetary law and proper appropriation to remedy these issues. The IRS may assist and census workers, so there is plenty of work to be done now through next June.  

*Other states may apply for federal money, verifying proof of immigration population and state funds expended in enforcing federal law. In gearing towards the border being manned by drones, we are creating a hostility that is unnecessary; as the border needs to be well patrolled, sealed, and monitored for information collection.

The proposal has been put on the table that everyone who does not have a US Driver’s license that they can verify with a passport, must apply for a Temporary Federal ID card. We had originally discussed equipping this with a bar code, charging 10% sales tax to buy items in the United States, so that we could retain revenue for services used. Driver’s License numbers or the TFID number could be entered into the cashier’s system, like it is for alcohol or the birthdate for a citizen OR BY SWIPING THE BAR CODE for all purchases, those buying domestically and those here visiting or working. We want to create a border that is not dysfunctional; one that operates lawfully and provides revenue, while properly protecting citizens and safeguarding the immigration process.
The ID cards would prevent useless waste of inquiries or expenditure of law enforcement’s time, prevent harassment by police, and it would give the federal government access to track who is coming in and out of the United States and for what purposes they are here and by monitoring commerce. This would also be without criminalizing legitimate workers or discriminating needlessly through undue scrutiny, with this system in place.

Until this Photo ID system can be implemented, it is NOT very wise to have an unmanned border with drones. It is a murderous electric fence, and it does nothing to protect citizens from immigrants already here, who go crazy over hearing their loved ones were killed on the border by our government. After all, by our penchant for importing 50% of Mexico’s drugs, we are half the problem, as Mexico is as well. Both countries are equally to blame for not coming to such diplomatic conclusions proposed in this Act.

While we are in a deficit, we can analyze the revenue figures, and approve implementation for July 1st, 2012, after getting the federal budget on a sustainable track of adhering to a $2.5 trillion annual revenue figure and a debt payment plan for deficit reduction.

If we do not adopt a border policy that includes basic legalization of marijuana for diplomatic control with respect to current state laws in this Act to take effect 1/1/12, as it is legal in California, then we are the hypocrites the cartels say we are.

The system has been stealing from its citizens in two ways: the cost of imprisonment and the failure to restore individuals to becoming taxpayers who have dopamine deficiencies, who use drugs.  Every Southern border state must issue a compliance statement and action plan on how they will comply yearly to federal enforcement laws. FBI questions vendors in airport controversy

Channel 2 Action News has confirmed federal agents are now involved in the concessions contract scandal at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Several vendors who submitted bids for food and beverage contracts told Channel 2 investigative reporter Jodie Fleischer that agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation approached them with questions about the process.
           
"They contacted me to see if we thought anything illegal had gone on in the bid process," said a bidder who asked not to be identified.
           
He told the FBI he wasn't happy with how the $3 billion in concessions contracts were awarded.
           
"I answered their questions that I had a feeling things went on, but I couldn't provide hard evidence," he told Fleischer.

He said agents first approached him in January, after a Channel 2 investigation exposed a fundraiser for Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, held just four days before the airport bidding started.

Reed brought in nearly $300,000 on March 17, 2011. Fleischer poured through the concessions bids and campaign records and tied at least $57,000 of it to would-be airport vendors.
           
Reed voluntarily gave back about $25,000 he received during the bidding period. But he refused to give back bidder money received in the days leading up to the bidding. Reed has repeatedly said he had nothing to do with the awarding of the airport contracts.
           
The anonymous source told Fleischer the FBI agents asked him about campaign contributions to Reed and Atlanta City Council members, and that in his opinion, the food and beverage contracts were a pay-to-play situation, meaning vendors got contracts in exchange for supporting public officials.
           
Channel 2 uncovered invitations for several fundraising events sent to and, in some cases, hosted by vendors who had or wanted airport contracts. The FBI asked about those too, "the winning bidders and the losing bidders, and how maybe what the connections are with the winners to elected officials," said the source.
           
Prominent businessman Mack Wilbourn, who recently hosted President Barack Obama at his home, also hosted a fundraiser for Mayor Reed. Wilbourn won more than $350 million worth of contracts at the airport. Fleischer obtained two fundraising emails Wilbourn also sent on behalf of two councilmen.
           
"It might take two years. It might take five years, hopefully one day we'll know the truth," said the anonymous source. "My hope for the city of Atlanta is that we put a better face on the airport and people around the country just stop expecting that this just always goes on in Atlanta."
           
Atlanta spokeswoman Sonji Jacobs said the city has not been contacted by the FBI.
           
"In three different judicial proceedings, the city of Atlanta has presented the facts about the airport concessions process and each time, the city has prevailed. The procurement process has been fair and transparent and not a single shred of evidence has been produced to substantiate any of the losing bidders' claims," Jacobs said.
           
She added, "It appears the losing bidders who have been making false allegations about the airport concessions procurement process for months have continued their smear campaign by contacting the Federal Bureau of Investigation with the same baseless accusations."
           
The vendor told Fleischer, "I think everybody in Atlanta should be happy that they're looking into it."

Glenn Richardson’s marital troubles went on for a decade: I remember first hearing about them from mutual friends and relatives when I was 17 years old... from 2 different people, both cousins. They both complained Glenn Richardson’s wife to be very demanding when it came to money. It ruined family meetings and holidays. Glenn Richardson had too much pride to admit the problems, and eventually, the wife abandoned her marital duties to him. Never being able to propose or agree to divorce terms, Richardson moved on, publicly and privately. The breakdown he had over his guilt actually helped him move on from a very destructive relationship. I never took a position on the scandal, because being a lobbyist during the time which Karen Handel took this yardstick to measure all female lobbyist with “sex, lies, and lobbyists”, I felt her hypocrisy over her and Thurbert Baker, along with former Gov. Sonny Perdue never charging and removing former Sheriff Victor Hill to be too much to bear, especially to be in poor taste and such sharp judgement of Richardson.

His personal breakdown was brutal and public, perhaps the worst political meltdown in recent memory in Georgia. But now, former House Speaker Glenn Richardson is back at the state capitol, attempting a most unlikely political revival.
Richardson, who resigned in 2009 after a suicide attempt and news of an affair with a lobbyist, qualified Wednesday to run for an open state senate seat.
“So why would I want to go into this?” said Richardson, 52, asking the question many are wondering. “I’m at peace. I think I can sympathize with people more than ever. I’ve struggled.”
Richardson, the one-time back bencher who became the first Republican state speaker since Reconstruction, admitted he was a bit nervous as he walked passed his old office for the first time in three years. He will have a tough primary election ahead of him. He faces a field that includes state Rep. Bill Hembree (R-Winston), a popular legislator who has been at the state house for 18 years.
“It’s a perfect fit,” said Hembree of the west metro Atlanta senate post he is seeking. “I’ve represented Douglas County and Paulding County, and I’m a native of Carroll County.”
Hembree, a self-proclaimed “social conservative,” served under Richardson in the House and represented a neighboring district. Hembree, 46, said he hasn’t spoken with Richardson since 2009, adding the former speaker’s decision to run was “somewhat surprising because it’s just three years since all the events that occurred in his life.”
Hembree said he would not get into dissecting those events. “I’m going to have a grassroots campaign and contact as many people as we can,” he said. “I’m not going to get distracted.”
Jim Naughton, a Carroll County businessman, also qualified.
In 2004, Richardson engineered a Republican takeover in the house, targeting money and other support to win key races statewide. The majority in the House cemented a Republican hold on state government that remains.
Richardson displayed a Libertarian streak. He sought to eliminate property taxes on vehicles and to cut school property taxes, shifting the burden to a broader sales tax. But the mercurial Richardson’s reign lasted just five years and was fraught with battles with house Democrats, senate Republicans and former Gov. Sonny Perdue.
By late 2009, Richardson was at the end of his rope. In November of that year, he tried to kill himself with sleeping pills and admitted he had suffered from depression for years. Later that month, Richardson’s ex-wife told a TV station her husband had had an affair with a lobbyist from Atlanta Gas Light. During the time, the House was voting on legislation that would have benefitted the utility.
Richardson resigned from office just days later. He says he was simply unable to function at the time, numbed by mental illness and battered by personal financial issues and a lack of political support.
“There’s no doubt some of my personal mistakes contributed to my troubles,” said Richardson, who added that the utility legislation did not pass.
He is aware he will be under scrutiny and attack during the campaign. He said that he talked with his family and friends before taking the dive back into politics.
“I hope [the voters] trust my heart this time,” Richardson said.

Aimee Copeland: "I felt you guys with me every step of the way"

Copeland makes first public appearance since battling flesh-eating bacteria

Friends and family are hosting a huge homecoming event in Snellville welcoming back Aimee Copeland.

SNELLVILLE, Ga. —
For the first time, Aimee Copeland got a chance to thank the Snellville community that supported her throughout her recovery from a flesh eating bacteria Friday night.

Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri talked with Copeland about the challenges she faced and what she's looking forward to now.

Hundreds of people gathered on the Snellville town green to get a chance to see Copeland for the first time since she returned home from rehabilitation.

Friday was also Aimee's first opportunity to say thank you in person to the community she credits with playing a large part in her recovery.

A smiling Copeland entered Snellville City Hall to applause. She thanked the city and residents for their generosity throughout her recovery.

"I felt you guys with me every step of the way with all of your thoughts and prayers so I just can't say thank you enough," Copeland said.

She also opened up about challenges she's facing. She said she doesn't necessarily have bad days-but there are tough moments. There's also pain-from phantom limbs and damaged nerves.

"That's really difficult because it's not something that's lasting it's just something that comes in sharp little spasms. And so that's really the hardest thing to deal with," Copeland said.

But she focuses more on her triumphs, like the first time she was able to stand after losing her hands, feet and a leg.

"It was the most incredible feeling I don't think I can top that," Copeland said.

On the town green, Copeland got a chance to talk with those who have been following her recovery. Like Karen Belton, a triple amputee lost her limbs to vascular disease 20 years ago.

She thinks Copeland's story and positive thinking will help others.

"If you think I'm going to be able to do this it's really hard but I'm going to work through it we're going to make this happen, then I truly believe you will," Belton said.

Mourning Otis Brumby

The journalism community is mourning the loss of renowned Cobb County newspaperman Otis Brumby who died Saturday after a two-year battle with prostate cancer.
Brumby’s career spanned business, public service and journalism. He got his start working under his father as an assistant to the publisher at the Marietta Daily Journal. In less than two years, he had taken over as publisher. Brumby went on to create the Neighbor Group of weekly suburban newspapers in 1969. Neighborhood Group grew to encompass 24 newspapers, two magazines, and six websites. Throughout the expansion of his own interests, Brumby remained with the Marietta Daily Journal. He was adamant that the MDJ remain a community publication focusing on local politics and neighborhood business.
Brumby’s love of writing led him to continue his work, even after his stage IV diagnosis in 2010. In an editorial in the Journal in November, Brumby told readers: “I may have cancer in my bones, but I still have ink in my veins.”
He leaves behind three daughters, a son and his wife, Martha Lee.

Remembering publisher Otis Brumby, whose first passion was the law 1940 – 2012

Many remembrances have been offered since the news of the death of Marietta Daily Journal publisher Otis Brumby Jr., an inactive member of the State Bar of Georgia, who died Saturday at home, surrounded by family and friends, after a two-year battle with prostate cancer. Tributes from leaders of the legal and political establishment have been warm, even grandiose. News reports quoted former Governor Roy Barns of the Barnes Law Firm crediting Brumby with keeping corruption out of Cobb County by demanding transparence in government.
Former Georgia Supreme Court Justice Harris Hines said no one had done more for Cobb County than Brumby. U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson paid tribute to his “best friend” on the floor of the Senate Tuesday, explaining that he would be returning to Marietta for the funeral Wednesday morning. Isakson also revealed that Brumby’s passion was the law, but “he didn’t make it.”
Instead, after graduating from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1964, he went to work for his father’s newspaper. Soon, he turned it into a chain of newspapers. Throughout his career, Brumby continued his “Around Town” column, which Isakson said was a Saturday must read for the politicians it held accountable. Some harsh memories of Brumby were shared on social media following his death by writers who got their start in journalism at Brumby’s chain of “Neighbor Newspapers” or at the MDJ.
None of the tributes touch the level of emotion in a framed and faded newspaper clipping hanging on the wall of the chambers of Cobb County Superior Court Judge Adele Grubbs. It’s a column Brumby wrote about Grubbs daughter, Alexis Grubbs, who was a rising senior at Marietta High School and a classmate of Brumby’s son, Otis Brumby III. “She was bright, compassionate, wholesome, respectful, courteous, unselfish, family oriented and focused,” Brumby wrote.  Alexis was killed by another driver in 1998 as she returned home from placing flowers on her father’s grave. She was 16.
Brumby’s description of Alexis is used as the criteria for the recipient of the Alexis Grubbs Memorial Scholarship awarded annually by the Cobb County Bar Association. In the past 13 years, the bar association has raised and awarded more than $100,000 to graduates of Marietta High School who have gone on to graduate from Duke, Morehouse, Davidson, University of Georgia and other schools, according to the bar association website.  Some have gone on to law school.
Also since then, Otis Brumby III has followed his father first to the University of Georgia Law School and bar membership and then to the family newspaper business. As it happened, this Tuesday was the date of the annual Alexis Grubbs Memorial Golf Tournament, which funds the scholarship.
The following day, today, is the day of Brumby’s funeral. In a hallway conversation Monday between her courtroom and her chambers, a solemn Grubbs said she would be attending both events, and that the two families remain “the closest of friends.”

Where wealth is not bestowed the Lord makes the little much by the contentment which the sanctified heart feels in a portion of which the tithe has been dedicated to the Lord. Selfishness looks first at home, but godliness seeks first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, yet in the long run selfishness is loss, and godliness is great gain. It needs faith to act towards our God with an open hand, but surely He deserves it of us; and all that we can do is a very poor acknowledgment of our amazing indebtedness to His goodness.
