Just landed in Charlotte NC and was met with a massively overflowing email box of Empty Chair Day photos from around the country! A Politico reporter asked me why I was covering the phenomenon and why so many on the Right felt compelled today to deliver a message in support of both the event and Clint Eastwood’s AWOL Obama skit. Here’s what I said:
It’s fun. It’s funny. It’s a social media phenomenon (see here for full round-up of blog and MSM coverage and Legal Insurrection’s comprehensive coverage here).
#EmptyChairDay is a way for conservatives to stand their political ground on their own front lawns — without the mainstream media gatekeepers whitewashing and obstructing their voices out of the campaign debate like they did during the RNC.
Clint Eastwood resonated with voters outside the snotty, derisive NY-DC-Hollywood axis. He braved derision and ridicule for standing on the convention stage. Activists on the right wanted to demonstrate that their appreciation. As always, humor is the best medicine.
Without further ado, here’s round two of the National Empty Chair Day social media photo album. There are hundreds and hundreds, so I can’t reprint all of them. But this is a great, raucous representative sample. Enjoy and thanks to all who participated! Remember in November.

Why the Federal Debt and Deficit Matter

In 2007 while he was campaigning for President, Barack Obama called George W. Bush irresponsible and un-patriotic for adding $4,000,000,000,000.00 to the US debt during his eight years in office.

President Obama was correct in his estimation. That has not prevented him, however, from increasing the debt by $5,000,000,000,000.00 in less than half the time it took George W. Bush.
Why does it matter? Why all the gloom and doom about ever increasing debt and deficits? The government can just print more money, so why does it matter?
The problem goes to the definition of the word inflation.

1. Economics . a persistent, substantial rise in the general level of prices related to an increase in the volume of money and resulting in the loss of value of currency ( opposed to deflation).
By definition, increasing the money supply (printing money, now called quantitative easing) is inflation. It is inflating the money supply. Anytime the money supply is increased, the value of each dollar is lessened, causing prices to increase.
Suppose instead of dollars, we traded in slices of pizza. You get paid at the end of the week in slices, and when you go to buy gas at the service station, you pay with slices of pizza.
Now consider the term value. Suppose the value of a whole pizza cut into six slices is what a tank of gasoline costs for your car.

All of the sudden, suppose the government decides that pizzas will be now cut into eight slices instead of six. You get paid in slices, remember, not pizzas. The value of things has not changed, however. A tank of gas still costs a whole pie, meaning you now have to earn two more slices to fill up your tank.

Each slice is smaller now, and buys less. This also means that if you have loaned the government pizza slices, by buying treasury bonds, the slices you get back when you cash in your bonds are worth less than the ones you lent them. With interest rates kept artificially low, as they are now, it may even mean that the slices you get back including interest will buy less than the slices you lent them.
Since the dollar is no longer tied to anything of physical value, like gold, its value is purely arbitrary. It depends only on the total number of dollars in circulation. As our government continues to spend money it doesn’t have, it has to borrow the difference, either by selling treasury bonds to it’s citizens, to other countries or to the federal reserve. In order for the federal reserve to purchase enough debt to keep the country going without interest rates going up and greatly increasing taxes on everyone, it has to print more money. At some point, price inflation will start to increase rapidly, what is known as hyperinflation. Prices will skyrocket as in the case of Brazil in the early 1990′s. At its peak, Brazil’s inflation rate was somewhere around 4,000%.
In America, we are already seeing prices on food and energy rise rapidly. There is no question that a fair portion of the rise in energy prices is due to the decreasing value of the dollar. As energy prices rise so does the cost of everything else, especially food.
This relation to quantitative easing (printing money) and price inflation can be illustrated quite easily by comparing the value of silver to the value of gasoline. In 1907 an ounce of silver would buy about 3 gallons of gasoline. In 1984 gasoline was about $1.20 per gallon and silver sold for about $8.14 per ounce meaning that 1 ounce of silver would buy about 6.8 gallons of gas. Today gasoline sells for about $3.83 per gallon and silver for $30.27 per ounce meaning that 1 ounce of silver today will buy 7.9 gallons of gas.
By the gasoline example we see that if silver were used as money, the cost of a gallon of gas today would actually be less than HALF of what it cost in 1907!
In a report titled “The Realities of Modern Hyperinflation” produced by the International Monetary Fund, authors Carmen M . Reinhart and Miguel A. Savastano point out;
“Chronic high inflation does not necessarily degenerate into hyperinflation. But, in the five countries reviewed here, hyperinflation did ensue, triggered by an uncontrolled expansion in the money supply that was fueled by endemic fiscal imbalances.”
One of the reasons for Ron Paul’s insistence on a return to sound money is to avoid a hyperinflation cycle brought about by an ever expanding money supply. If we continue to spend money that we do not have at the federal level, we are headed for exactly the kind of hyperinflation which is devastating to the poor and middle class. Simply taxing the rich will not fix our debt and deficit problem. The rich only have enough money to keep our government spending at its voracious rate for several months at best, even if we confiscate ALL their money.
Currently all revenue the federal government receives is spent on mandatory programs, social security, medicare, medicaid, food stamps, welfare and debt service. All discretionary spending including defense, is borrowed money. If we do not deal with the entitlement programs we are doomed to an inflationary spiral that will quickly spin out of control.
The IMF report leaves us with seven lessons to remember about hyperinflation.
Policymakers would do well to bear in mind the seven lessons that emerge from this overview of modern hyperinflations.
1. Hyperinflations seldom materialize overnight and are usually preceded by a protracted period of high and variable inflation.
2. Stabilization may take years if fiscal policies are not adjusted appropriately. Even when fiscal adjustment is implemented, it takes time to achieve low inflation, especially when money is used as the nominal anchor.
3. Sharp reductions in fiscal deficits are always a critical element of a stabilization program, regardless of the choice of monetary anchor.
4. Unifying exchange markets and establishing currency convertibility are often essential ingredients of stabilization, irrespective of the choice of main nominal anchor.
5. Output collapses during, and sometimes in the run-up to, hyperinflation. Although stabilization measures cap the implosion in economic activity, there is little evidence to suggest that they kindle a robust rebound in economic activity.
6. Hyperinflations are accompanied by an abrupt reduction in financial intermediation.
7. Stopping a hyperinflation does not restore demand for domestic money and domestic currency assets to the levels that prevailed before the hyperinflation began. Capital returns to the country when high inflation stops, but dollarization and other forms of indexation dominate financial intermediation for many years.

Republican nominee for Vice President Paul Ryan addressed a packed crowd today at East Carolina University Greenville, NC. He was standing more than two hundred miles east of the site where the Democratic National Convention is due to begin tomorrow, but they could hear him in Charlotte. His message was clear: America is no better off, and in many ways worse off, than it was when President Barack Obama came to office.

The audience--two thousand inside the gymnasium, several hundred in overflow seating next door, and thousands more turned away--stood patiently in the humid, sweltering late summer heat to see the Ryan, drawing numbers reminiscent of the closing weeks of the 2008 campaign, when Gov. Sarah Palin drew enthusiastic standing-room-only crowds even as the Obama/Biden ticket honed in on victory. Today, polls heading into the convention show the Romney/Ryan ticket either winning or closing the gap quickly.
The Ryan event was aimed not only at voters in a must-win swing state, but also sent a signal of strength and defiance as Democrats begin making their pitch to the nation. The Obama campaign has struggled to stay on message, as several surrogates--including master political strategist David Axelrod--have failed to answer “yes” to journalists who have asked the simple question whether Americans are better off today than in 2008.
Ryan took full advantage:


We know that your governor’s over there, and your lieutenant governor--and we also know that President Obama’s over there. [Boos] And President Obama’s going to be giving a big speech. And there are going to be lots of speeches--a lot of words. Let me quote President Obama four years ago: “If you don’t have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.” Ladies and gentlemen, that is exactly what Barack Obama is doing today. [Cheers] You see, the Presidenthas no record to run on. [Audience: “That’s right!] In fact, every president since the Great Depression who asked Americans to send them into a second term could say that you were better off today than you were four years ago. Except for Jimmy Carter and for President Barack Obama. [Cheers]
Mainstream media journalists were at the event in abundance--though they paid what seemed to be disproportionate attention to a small group of Obama supporters who had gathered to demonstrate against Ryan. Ryan spoke evenly, citing facts and figures, punctuating crowd-pleasing lines with explanations aimed at a national audience.
Aides strolled through the crowd--including foreign policy adviser Dan Senor, who watched from the back of the room. The next stop for the Romney/Ryan team is Vermont, where they will prepare for the October debates, keeping a low profile while the Democrats stage their convention. Other Republicans will remain on the front lines in Charlotte. For now, Ryan has thrown down a challenge that Obama must answer.

Recent expenses for humanitarian aid by the United States designated up to $100 billion, futile negotiation on behalf of the UN and resignation of Envoy Annan, have not resolved but marked increasing hostilities that threaten the security of Israel and peace in the world since December of 2011, lead me this day to write this regarding the country of Syria.

Since the inception of the Arab Spring, an Arab revolt that has been criticized and mired with controversy, with the toppling of Gaddafi by proxy war and the destruction of the radicalized intelligence storehouse coupled with the eradication of Osama Bin Laden propaganda center in Pakistan by secret operation, have been met with due skepticism over policy and legitimate authority over Executive Order. I find it my duty, as Tea Party Chief, to speak on behalf of those who do not have a voice in our government, for their imitation of our movement and desire for freedom in their own country.

While it is true that Obama has been reluctant to make a decision on Syria because his authority has been successfully challenged and found to be illegitimate, Obama has managed not only to arouse the anger of Ahmadinejad, but he has also managed to make Israel feel as if they are standing alone against terrorism directed at their country. Obama not only lacks the authority to carry through a decision on Syria, politically he is the wrong person because of his Muslim associations which would make it appear that he is making a decision based on favoritism and not on the necessity of the security of the United States. Secretary Clinton, who has called for an airstrike against Assad, is also in a position of compromise over her aide Abedin. Yet when I gave permission of appropriation, based on need and consideration of budget constraints, I did not intend for that $100 billion to be consumed by humanitarian aid only, without it being used for an air strike. It has since been nearly six months, and no decision has been made to act in any way other than to provide humanitarian aid. Which is why our budget consideration was so important, and so it will be also for the proposed continuing resolution.

With that in mind, Vice President Joe Biden was sworn in 7-11-12 over Obama’s lack of provable citizenship, he was designated 7-23-12 for the delegation of act of war with Senator John Kerry and Senator John McCain:

My objections to Assad remaining in power have nothing to do with Obama’s goals for the Muslim World:

  • Assad has murdered his own people, under the guise that Al Qaeda is actively operating against him, and he has failed to produce this evidence to justify his people being killed in the crossfire.
  • Assad has engaged in acts of Civil War against his own people, that are intolerable: use of tanks and planes, and he still can not maintain control.
  • Assad dropped pamphlets from the sky on Saturday, his conduct and actions something only demonstrated from the likes of Hitler, and with this action, we feel that use of biochemical warfare is evidently an option despite his statements contrary.

  • Assad has not only created a haven for Al Qaeda who was pushed out from Iraq over the Summer, but he will be guilty of quartering them and has been given a 60 day notice that he must identify and expel them from his country, or he will be met with swift response.
  • Assad has abused the power of the UN to promote more violence and intimidation against his people, and he has not progressed to demonstrate that he can rule effectively without endangering the safety of his people, the countries around him, or those disaffected by his sectarian-fueled blood feud.
  • Assad is meeting the threshold of despotism likened only in recent memory to Saddam Hussein.

In other words, Assad has compelled us to a state of war with Syria by default. While we acknowledge this war is not against the people of Syria or the Syrian rebels, Assad has given comfort to our enemies and failed to govern his own people justly. While it has not been the choice of the United States to act as it has in recent past, the threat of Assad’s use of biochemical weaponry and recent threats by Hezbollah against Israel to incite and provoke war, make this conflict a horse of a different color.

Now it is not just about Syria anymore, but the destabilization of Syria for the benefit of our enemy, whose aspirations are to draw us into conflict or to incite war with Iran and Israel, so that they do not have to use their funds or money.

Rather than seeing this as ‘just another war truncating the War on Terror’, this is our opportunity to conclude these conflicts and draw a formal end with this climax in Syria.

Rather than spending the upkeep for other military bases, we intend to exile terrorists and those convicted of violent crime to Johnston Atoll. Syria is of supreme advantage to us, and short-term occupation would only be necessary, not quite like Iraq or the training of the Afghan government to handle their own issues of security. Syria is different.

Assad has been given the following deadline, until September 30th, which is 40 days from now our time, and he has been warned repeatedly that an order could be issued at any time of choosing, depending upon our intelligence or that of Israel’s and necessity to act against Al Qaeda, or threat of nuclear or biochemical warfare in the region.


I want to make the distinction here that if it happens that the Syrian rebels are able to work with the UN to draft a new Constitution and appointment of leadership, Palestinians may have found a new home and country of their own. I say this because I see no political concession by Israel permitting Palestinian representation, though by majority of population Palestinians represent the West Bank, and I see no compromise to the 1967 survey that makes either side happy nor is right in the eyes of both groups.

Damascus or Aleppo may be used as a US military base, to prevent conflict and stabilize this emerging new government that is cooperative to the US and the UN vision.

If this is not an option, I support the use of drones or whatever is necessary to pre-empt an even greater loss of life and to prevent conflict of biochemical and nuclear warfare.

I pray this be considered by Congress, not to supplant the need for the passage of the 2013 Defense Bill as written (though it is needed and required without sequester applied), but that our need is even greater to resolve these threats expediently and close these wars and conflict by 2014.

"A decision has been taken to respond and the response will be very great," Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in an interview with the Beirut-based Al Mayadeen television.
"The response will not be just inside the Israeli entity - American bases in the whole region could be Iranian targets," he said, citing information he said was from Iranian officials. "If Israel targets Iran, America bears responsibility."
Heightened Israeli rhetoric about Tehran's nuclear facilities, which the West says could be part of a weapons program, has stoked speculation that it may attack Iran before U.S. elections in November.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged world powers on Sunday to set a "clear red line" to convince Iran they would prevent it from obtaining nuclear arms.
Israel, thought to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed power, views Iran's nuclear program as a threat to its regional dominance and to its very existence. Tehran says the atomic work is for peaceful purposes only.
But Netanyahu's cabinet is divided over the wisdom of attacking Iran, and Israeli officials have dropped heavy hints of a climbdown strategy, under which Netanyahu would shelve threats of an attack now in return for a stronger public pledge from President Barack Obama on conditions that would provoke U.S. action in future.
Nasrallah said there were divisions in Israel over attacking Iran. "Personally I do not expect the Israeli enemy - at least in the coming months or foreseeable future - (to wage) an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran," he said.
Nasrallah pointed to the fragile global economy, which would be weakened further by any sharp rise in crude oil prices stemming from conflict in the Gulf, and to likely Israeli casualties in any war with Iran.
"Netanyahu and (Defence Minister Ehud) Barak inflate the benefit and play down the cost," he said, referring to Barak's estimates that Israel could suffer up to 500 fatalities in any conflict aimed at wiping out Iran's nuclear facilities.
Hezbollah guerrillas fought a 34-day war with Israel six years ago in which 1,200 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and 160 people in Israel, mostly soldiers, were killed.
War with Iran would be more deadly, Nasrallah said. "We don't know what will happen in the region."
NO CHEMICAL WEAPONS
He repeated a warning he made last month that Hezbollah could cause widespread destruction if it came into conflict with Israel again, but denied that the Shi'ite Islamist guerrilla and political movement would ever use chemical weapons.
"We do not have chemical weapons and we will not use chemical weapons," Nasrallah said. "The use of chemical weapons is forbidden - for us that is absolute.
Unrest in neighboring Syria, which acknowledged for the first time in July that it possessed chemical or biological weapons, has led to Western fears that those weapons might fall into the hands of Islamist groups including Hezbollah.
"I do not need chemical weapons - regardless of the religious or practical position," Nasrallah said, addressing Israel. "You have factories, and you have bases, and compounds, and I have rockets."
Israel had several "weak points" which could be targeted, including "economic, industrial, electrical, chemical and nuclear" sites, the Hezbollah leader said.
Even if Israel launched a first strike attack on Lebanon, destroying a large part of Hezbollah's missile arsenal, the militant group would retain the capacity to hit back with deadly force, he added.
Two weeks ago Nasrallah said Hezbollah could kill tens of thousands of Israelis by hitting targets with what he described as precision-guided missiles.
"Hitting these targets with a small number of rockets will turn ... the lives of hundreds of thousands of Zionists to real hell," he said at the time.

While there are police who serve and protect the streets ofAmerica, one cop who slams a woman against car gets fired and arrested for his aggressive actions.
According to the Huffington Post, a Florida police officer was fired and arrested after a camera mounted in his car showed him slamming a hit-and-run suspect against the police car multiple times. The video shows officer Christopher Geraci grabbing Abbi Bonds’ arm while shoving her against his car after she refused to obey his command to hang up her cellphone and reenter her car. On the video, Bonds’ is heard saying, “I’m not fighting you. Why are you hitting me?”
While 29-year-old Bonds’ was being apprehended for being a suspect in a hit-and-run incident, the aggressive actions taken by the former Florida officer have been taken very seriously. Bonds did not resist Geraci as she stood outside her damaged vehicle around 2 a.m.on Aug. 2 and Pensacola Police Chief Chip Simmons is quick to distance the department from Geraci, “You should only use the level of force that is necessary. What we saw on that video is in excess of that … It fell short of our expectations.”
Geraci is being charged with misdemeanor battery and has since been fired from the police force. Meanwhile, Bonds has yet to file a complaint against the department, but does state that her sustained injuries still cause her pain.
If convicted, Geraci could be sentenced to one year in jail.

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan Dies at 54

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Clarke Duncan, the hulking, prolific character actor whose dozens of films included an Oscar-nominated performance as a death row inmate in "The Green Mile" and such other box office hits as "Armageddon," ''Planet of the Apes" and "Kung Fu Panda," is dead at age 54.

Duncan died Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he was being treated for a heart attack, said his fiancée, reality TV personality Rev. Omarosa Manigault, in a statement released by publicist Joy Fehily.
The muscular, 6-foot-4 (1.96 meter) Duncan, a former bodyguard who turned to acting in his 30s, "suffered a myocardial infarction on July 13 and never fully recovered," the statement said. "Manigault is grateful for all of your prayers and asks for privacy at this time. Celebrations of his life, both private and public, will be announced at a later date."
In the spring of 2012, Duncan had appeared in a video for PETA, the animal rights organization, in which he spoke of how much better he felt since becoming a vegetarian three years earlier.
"I cleared out my refrigerator, about $5,000 worth of meat," he said. "I'm a lot healthier than I was when I was eating meat."
Duncan had a handful of minor roles before "The Green Mile" brought him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. The 1999 film, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, starred Tom Hanks as a corrections officer at a penitentiary in the 1930s. Duncan played John Coffey, a convicted murderer with a surprisingly gentle demeanor and extraordinary healing powers.
Duncan's performance caught on with critics and moviegoers and he quickly became a favorite in Hollywood, appearing in several films a year. He owed some of his good fortune to Bruce Willis, who recommended Duncan for "The Green Mile" after the two appeared together in "Armageddon." Duncan would work with Willis again in "Breakfast of Champions," ''The Whole Nine Yards" and "Sin City."
His industrial-sized build was suited for everything from superhero films ("Daredevil") to comedy ("Talledega Nights," ''School for Scoundrels"). His gravelly baritone alone was good enough for several animated movies, including, "Kung Fu Panda," ''Delgo" and "Brother Bear." Among Duncan's television credits: "The Apprentice," ''The Finder," ''Two and a Half Men" and "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody."
Born in Chicago in 1957, Duncan was raised by a single mother whose resistance to his playing football led to his deciding he wanted to become an actor. But when his mother became ill, he dropped out of college, Alcorn State University, and worked as a ditch digger and bouncer to support her. By his mid-20s, he was in Los Angeles, where he looked for acting parts and became a bodyguard for Will Smith, Jamie Foxx and other stars. The murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G., for whom Duncan had been hired to protect before switching assignments, led him to quit his job and pursue acting full-time.
Early film and television credits, when he was usually cast as a bodyguard or bouncer, included "Bulworth," ''A Night at the Roxbury" and "The Players Club."

Selfishness looks first at home, but godliness seeks first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, yet in the long run selfishness is loss, and godliness is great gain. It needs faith to act towards our God with an open hand, but surely He deserves it of us; and all that we can do is a very poor acknowledgment of our amazing indebtedness to His goodness.
