Prayers: Lord, we thank You for Your presence and peace, that passes all understanding: thank You for Your Word that instructs us in the way of righteousness. Let us praise You! Lord let us not lean on our own understanding but have faith in the places that we are weak that You are strong! Your grace and mercy did not depend on us, but forgiveness was delivered by Your perfection! May we thank You always! However Lord, we are in a time where we can not be grateful for Obama for he never should've been President: I can't see any reason that he deserves to be or remain in Office, and I ask You what we need to do. I have urged him repeatedly to leave because his oath breaking brings trouble on his own house and our country! While it is obvious to me, open his blind spirit to see we're drawing straws and shouldn't have to pick between Planned Parenthood or aiding Syria, or having the poor and sick cared for vs. forcing taxation by coercion for PLAN B and abortions. I thank You-Amen. GATeaPartyChief

I met Rick a few times when he first ran for Congress and liked him as our Representative and volunteered for several of his campaigns. He was OK as a Senator and I never viewed him as presidential material. But the more the left attackshim, the more hate and vitriol they direct at him, the more I want to see him in the Oval Office. The parents of these left-wing wackos should be ashamed of their children for what they do and say. It really can be only one thing: hatred, out and out hatred. I think they are angry, stupid, spoiled rich kids who follow Maddow, Jon Stewart(sic), Maher and all the others who do nothing but hate on conservatives. My God, they still blame Bush for every woe and still post lies and derogatory cartoons about him. Well, you know all these things, I just needed to vent....

The ministry says in a statement the deaths occurred Wednesday in the Afghan capital of Kabul, in the eastern city of Jalalabad, and in the provinces of Logar and Parwan.
It said four of the dead were killed during a protest in Parwan.
The ministry said security guards at a U.S. base outside Kabul killed one man, while one man each was killed during protests in Jalalabad and Logar.

GINGRICH HELPED LOBBYIST PROTECT FREDDIE

Hiring part of broader bid to target GOP critics, shore up Dem support

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich helped broker a “special arrangement” between Congress and Freddie Mac in which the semi-private mortgage giant continued to enjoy subsidies as long as it made housing more “affordable” for low-income and minority borrowers, according to Freddie Mac insiders who spoke to WND on condition of anonymity.
In fact, Gingrich championed the “affordable-housing” policies he now criticizes for helping inflate the housing bubble that burst painfully in 2008. The one-time Freddie consultant joined Democrats in shielding the agency from reforms that would have reined in its risky mortgage underwriting.
As Freddie fed the subprime mortgage bubble last decade, Gingrich helped its chief lobbyist fend off efforts by fellow Republicans to dismantle, or at least better regulate, the now-failed agency. They devised a two-pronged strategy: buy off Republican critics of its subsidies and affordable-housing mission with donations and fundraising events, while currying favor with Democrats, who sought to protect such government benefits in return for easier financial credit for their constituents.
“As long as we focused on affordable housing,” one Freddie insider said, “our position was secure.”
The government benefits, which included a multibillion-dollar line of credit from the Treasury and exemption from both state and federal taxes, gave Freddie an edge over market competitors.
Gingrich denies lobbying for Freddie and claims he only consulted for the quasi-governmental agency as a “historian.”
While records show the longtime GOP lawmaker never registered as a lobbyist, former Freddie officials say he helped the agency’s chief lobbyist – Craig C. Thomas – defeat two key GOP-sponsored pieces of legislation designed to toughen oversight of Freddie and its twin, Fannie Mae, less than three years before the mortgage crisis.
One bill, the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act, authorized the creation of a new watchdog agency to approve mortgage products underwritten by Freddie and Fannie. The other, the Federal Housing Finance Reform Act, limited the mortgage agencies’ portfolios and hiked their capital reserve requirements.
Coached by Gingrich, who was under a $600,000 retainer at the time, Thomas lobbied hard against the bills, neither of which made it to the floor of the Senate for final vote. Top GOP targets included Rep. Spencer Bachus of the House Financial Services Committee, who records show pocketed at least $55,000 in campaign donations from Freddie and Fannie; and Sen. Richard Shelby of the Senate Banking Committee, who also received at least $55,000.
Also opposing the measures were key Democrat leaders – including Rep. Barney Frank and Sen. Chris Dodd – who argued tighter regulation of Freddie and Fannie would cut into their public mission to finance low-income and affordable housing.
As part of his lucrative contract, Gingrich also publicly defended what he saw as the benefits of the Freddie business model in several articles and talks. Freddie sources say he regularly circulated among members of Congress during this period.
Freddie Mac, now in government conservatorship, denied requests to furnish for examination any “deliverable” materials, including drafts of reports written by the Gingrich Group, as cited under the contract drawn up in the mid-2000s.
Internal Freddie records show Gingrich wasn’t the only GOP power broker hired back then to target Republican reformers. Others included Sen. Alfonse D’Amato and Reps. Susan Molinari and Vin Weber, as well as Susan Hirschmann, former chief of staff to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. GOP political consultant Frank Luntz was also retained by Freddie as part of its overall $12 million campaign at the time to beat back GOP efforts to privatize Freddie and Fannie and take away their government advantages.
Gingrich’s past activities, both in public and behind the scenes, contrast starkly with remarks the GOP presidential contender has made about Freddie and Fannie on the campaign trail.
Last October, during a presidential debate sponsored by Bloomberg News and the Washington Post, Gingrich blamed the government-sponsored lenders for a major role in the subprime lending crisis and argued they should be “broken up.” He also fingered Democrat champions of affordable housing who took cash contributions from Freddie and Fannie; and who, in turn, helped protect them from regulatory oversight and contributed to a loose lending “environment.”
“If you want to put people in jail, you ought to start with Barney Frank and Chris Dodd who created the environment,” Gingrich said. “Let’s look at the politicians who profited from the environment, and the politicians who put this country in trouble.”
In the 1990s, however, Gingrich supported the Clinton administration’s aggressive campaign to use Freddie and Fannie to boost in his own words, “affordable housing,” and home ownership among minorities.
In 1994, for example, Gingrich attended a Fannie event in Atlanta celebrating its commitment to lending to poor minority communities there.
“Fannie Mae is an excellent example of a former government institution fulfilling its mandate while functioning in the market economy,” he said. “Fannie Mae has had a regional presence in Atlanta for over 40 years, and the announcement of a partnership office demonstrates its continued commitments to affordable housing in the Atlanta metropolitan area.”
Five years later, Gingrich stepped down from Congress and immediately joined Freddie as a consultant on “strategic planning and public policy,” securing a $25,000-a-month contract. At the same time, Gingrich’s chief of staff, Arne Christenson, became a paid lobbyist for Fannie.
Freddie’s chief lobbyist at the time, Mitchell Delk, said in a recent interview that the 1999 contract required Gingrich to provide, among other things, advice on issues such as “expanding home ownership among Hispanics” and other minorities.
All told, Gingrich earned as much as $1.8 million during his two contract periods with Freddie Mac.

I am in full agreement with Rick Santorum that Obama has “some phony theology” not based on the Bible. We have all seen his disregard of our Constitution, how there is no amendment for him to remain in Office as a non-citizen, and how he exploits his political ties and money relationships for an agenda contrary to our values and beliefs, attacking the very foundation of our country!! This was poignantly seen when Obama refused to honor his Oath to the Catholic Church and those he served regarding H.R. 4872 and the language of other health care bills, in refusing to relinquish the legislation that he has no power to enforce anyway, when he staged an attempt to dominate and dictate to the Catholic Church.... it backfired on him:

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE CATHOLIC VOTE: people of various faiths have come out against Obama for crossing the line, forcing religious entities to violate conscience to fund abortifaceants and other birth control methods, when this money could be better served to support general wellness of the poor, not elective coverage costs. While most believed Obama to be genuine and that the DNC had chosen a legitimate, eligible alternative to Bush Jr. who would end war, they soon discovered that their vote was wasted and their lack of involvement on waiting for Obama to pan out ruined our Nation, drawing us farther away from God's agenda! Obama breaking his Oath, along with the rule of law not being upheld, especially when it comes to guaranteed constitutional freedoms and religious liberties has built the wall of prayer to prepare for this siege, and they're selecting Rick Santorum to carry the banner of their values and beliefs to new Presidential policies:

[edit]1970s
Bain & Company was established in 1973 by a group of seven former partners from the Boston Consulting Group headed by Bill Bain. The company was headquartered in Lexington, Massachusetts on Militia Drive.
Under Bain’s direction, the firm implemented a number of unconventional practices in its early years. Notably, Bain & Co. would only work with one client per industry to avoid potential conflicts of interest.[5] Partners did not carry business cards and clients were referred to by code names, further demonstrating its reputation for enforcing client confidentiality. The company preferred to win work by boardroom referrals rather than marketing itself, sometimes landing clients by offering several weeks of work at no cost until proving the results of its services. Bain consultants preferred to work on increasing a company's market value rather than simply handing clients a list of recommendations.[6] To win business, Bain demonstrated the increase in stock price of Bain's clients relative to the Dow Jones Industrial Average.[7]
The firm's founding was followed by a period of growth in the late 1970s and early 1980s as the firm opened offices in London, Munich, San Francisco, and Tokyo.
Another innovative consulting approach that Bain & Co. pioneered was aligning its incentives with its clients' performance by occasionally accepting equity in lieu of fixed fees. An estimated 10% of Bain's revenue is derived from this equity participation or "success fees". This model has proved successful for both Bain and its clients. For example, the firm took an ownership stake in fruit processor Del Monte Foods while working to revamp the company’s strategy.[8] "Coming into a leveraged buyout situation is never easy," says Del Monte CEO Richard Wolford. "Knowing Bain and their desire to deliver results, they probably would have provided ongoing support regardless. But the fact they own a stake doesn't hurt."
[edit]1980s
After a successful start, Bain & Co. found itself facing a growing list of challenges in the late 1980s. In the midst of sluggish business conditions and overstaffing, Bain also faced the dilemma of having to turn away business due to its one-client-per-industry restriction. Competition increased as other firms copied Bain’s implementation-focused strategy.
However daunting these external challenges, it was internal infighting among the senior partnership that threatened to tear the firm apart. In response, Bain & Co. was formally incorporated in 1985 and, over the course of two years, the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) was established. Bain's senior partners began borrowing against their equity for cash, eventually leaving the firm with a heavy debt load.[5]
As business slowed, this debt load began to squeeze the firm. Bain ultimately found itself in non-compliance with Bank of New England loan covenants. The resulting debt write-off at the Bank of New England eventually resulted in that bank's failure in 1991.[9]
[edit]1990s
Facing financial duress, Bain Capital partner Mitt Romney was asked to rejoin and lead Bain & Co. as interim CEO. Bringing along two lieutenants from Bain Capital, Romney began a traveling campaign to rally employees at all Bain offices globally. Romney also negotiated a complex settlement between the Bain partnership and the firm's lenders, including a $10 million reduction in the $38 million Bain owed the Bank of New England,[10] which by that time had been seized by the FDIC and placed in Chapter 7 liquidation.
The Boston Globe pointed out that:
"Over several weeks, Romney managed negotiations with the banks and among the partners... The moment came when negotiations produced a package in which Bill Bain and the founding partners would give up control of the firm, turning back $30 million they had taken from the ESOP and $100 million in notes they held against the firm."
Romney’s plan involved "a complicated restructuring of the firm's stock-ownership plan, real-estate holdings, bank loans, and money still owed to partners".[11] To avoid the financial crisis that a buyout would have triggered, the group of founding partners agreed to return about $100M cash and forgive outstanding debt.[6]
Although in the role for just one year before returning to Bain Capital, Romney's work had three profound impacts on the firm. First, ownership was officially shifted from the owners to the firm's 70 general partners. Second, transparency in the firm's finances increased dramatically (e.g. partners were able to know each other's salaries[11]). Third, Bill Bain relinquished ownership in the firm that carried his name.

Aja Brooks Orit Gadiesh at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, 2007.
Within a year, Bain bounced back to profitability without major partner defections,[11] and the groundwork was laid for a period of steady growth.
In 1993, the head position was split into two roles – an executive head (Worldwide Managing Director) and a non-executive head (Chairman of the Board). Orit Gadiesh, named Bain’s first Chairman in 1993, was fundamental in maintaining Bain’s culture. After spending two years in military intelligence for the Israeli army and earning a degree in psychology from Hebrew University, Gadiesh enrolled in the Harvard Business School and graduated as a Baker Scholar. As a junior partner during the turnaround, she had been instrumental in keeping senior partners from leaving the firm; as chairman, she became the first female to lead one of the major consulting firms. Gadiesh was known throughout the firm for her passionate leadership and "True North" philosophy, which the firm still embraces. For the past several years, she has landed among Forbes list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Business and is on the board of several organizations, including the World Economic Forum.[6]
Under Gadiesh and MD Tom Tierney, Bain simultaneously loosened its restrictions around the one-client-per-industry policy, by assuring clients that the firm's strict internal professional standards prohibited the circulation of client data internally, and expanded its presence worldwide throughout the 1990s. The firm grew by 25 percent per year, expanded its office count from 12 to 26, and increased partnership from about 70 to nearly 200.[6]
[edit]2000s
The new millennium began with Bain & Co. guiding its clients through managing the changes involved in the "New Economy". The economic slowdown following the dotcom boom was painful on all the major consulting players; however, Bain’s previous experiences with contraction left the firm zealous in avoiding layoffs. The firm weathered the economic downturn by investing in its leadership ranks with internal promotions and key external hires. Subsequently, the economic recovery has been followed by another period of sustained growth. In 2007, the firm expanded its global footprint to 37 offices, with office openings in Kiev, Moscow, Helsinki, and Frankfurt. The worldwide consulting headcount increased to approximately 2,700. Bain now has more offices in Europe than in any other region; the upshot of which being more revenue comes from its Continental operations than either the North American or Asian markets.
The new millennium also brought changes to Bain's traditional generalist approach to solving client issues. Due to increasing specialization in the consulting industry, the firm developed niche "Practice Areas" in order to better serve the varying needs of its increasingly diverse multinational and local client base. Through targeted industry hires, Bain added industry experts to each of these "Practice Areas", significantly raising its profile in fields such as financial services, healthcare, information technology and media/entertainment.

[edit]Guinness affair
The Guinness share-trading fraud is a corporate takeover scandal of the 1980s. In April 1986, the British government launched an investigation into Guinness' purchase of Distillers Company for equity valued at $3.8 billion. The government suspected that Guinness may have illegally inflated its stock price to sway Distillers' shareholders away from a competing offer from the Argyll Group, a Scottish food retailer.
Several executives were implicated in the investigation: the Guinness CEO Ernest Saunders, several top executives at Morgan Grenfell (Guinness's investment bank), and Guinness' director of financial strategy & development and then Bain VP Olivier Roux (who had temporarily been assigned to Guinness by Bain). Roux was still on Bain's payroll at the time, prompting public criticism that Bain was guilty of a conflict of interest and leaving Bain vulnerable to lawsuits. Roux later resigned his posts at both Guinness and Bain.[12]
[edit]Sir Jack Lyons and "the Guinness Four"
Sir Jack Lyons, whom Bain hired to help build its consulting practice in Britain, admitted to receiving more than $3 million in fees from Guinness for "advisory services". His company, J. Lyons Chamberlayne, was also under investigation for accepting another $480,000 from Guinness linked to improper share buying. Bain fired Lyons in January 1987; he was later charged (along with Ernest Saunders, Gerald Ronson, and Anthony Parnes). The four men became known as "the Guinness Four." All men were convicted but Lyons was not imprisoned due to ill health. He lost his knighthood and was fined £3,000,000 plus £1,000,000 prosecution costs.[13]
Due to Roux's resignation and Lyon's swift termination, Bain & Co. was never accused of any wrongdoing in the Guinness affair.
[edit]Value Partners case
[edit]Background
In 1998, Value Partners, a smaller management consulting firm based in Milan, filed a lawsuit in U.S. federal court against Bain & Co., alleging Bain's theft of Value Partners' office in São Paulo, Brazil, including its clients, employees, and confidential and proprietary information.[14]
Value Partners, which was established in 1993, had expanded its operations to five offices worldwide with 80 professionals. In 1994, Value Partners opened an office in São Paulo, Brazil. By 1997, Value Partners' Brazilian office was thriving and had grown to 25 professionals.[14]
Value Partners claimed that Bain unlawfully caused members of Value Partners São Paulo office to enter into a conspiracy with Bain to take-over Value Partners' Brazilian office. Bain, which at the time had no business presence in Brazil, allegedly determined that it thereby could expand into the region, without incurring the associated start-up costs and risks of a new branch office.[14]
According to the complaint, unbeknownst to fellow members of Value Partners at the time, the co-conspirators remained with Value Partners even after agreeing to join Bain, so as to secretly work from within Value Partners to better effectuate the wholesale misappropriation of Value Partners' São Paulo office.[14]
[edit]Post-trial outcome
In 2002 following a four-week trial, the jury found Bain liable for unfair competition and tortious interference under Brazilian law and awarded Value Partners $10 million in compensatory damages (the full award requested by Value Partners at trial). Value Partners was also awarded approximately $2.5 million in prejudgment interest.[15]
Bain's post-trial motions were denied, and Bain appealed to the First Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Value Partners filed a cross-appeal, contesting the District Court's denial of its companion claim for treble damages for unfair competition under Massachusetts law.[15]
[edit]Relationship with Bain Capital
about an hour ago · Like
Aja Brooks In spite of popular belief, Bain & Co. is an entirely separate entity from Bain Capital. Bain Capital is a private investment firm specializing in private equity (PE), public equity, leveraged debt asset, venture capital, and absolute return investments. Bain Capital does not provide management consulting services to its clients.[16]
Bain Capital was founded in 1984 by several former Bain & Co. partners that include Mitt Romney (later to become the 70th Governor of Massachusetts), T. Coleman Andrews III, and Eric Kriss.[7] On account of these shared roots, Bain & Co. still maintains a strong institutional relationship with Bain Capital. Many current Bain Capital MD's and professional staffers began their business careers at Bain & Co.[17]
[edit]Competitors

Bain & Company is one of the market leaders in management consulting services to the Fortune 500 set, along with McKinsey & Company, The Boston Consulting Group, Booz & Company, A.T. Kearney, and Monitor Group. This top tier of consulting firms recruits young professionals from the world's most elite undergraduate and business schools. Also increasingly, larger technology and implementation-focused firms such as Deloitte, Accenture, IBM, and Ernst & Young have been building out strategy groups to try to steal some share from the pure strategy consultancies.
Although these three firms compete directly across all major sectors and geographies, each firm possesses its own unique profile that defines its sustainable competitive advantage in the marketplace. Having pioneered private equity (PE) consulting, Bain is the strongest player in the PE/LBO (Leveraged BuyOut) space, servicing most of the major private investment firms globally; Bain also displays competitive strength in the closely related mergers & acquisitions (M&A), organizational/turnaround and financial services consulting spaces. Geographically, Bain displays a strong market share in the Americas and Europe but is weak in Asia and other emerging markets.
McKinsey & Co., on account of its experience, deep board/C-level relationships and scale, is currently the strongest player in the MBB tier with particular strongholds in general strategy, financial services, operations and IT (through its BTO subsidiary). McKinsey holds the highest market share among the four firms globally with geographic strength across the Americas, Europe and Asia. BCG displays competitive strength in general strategy and holds the second-highest market share globally after McKinsey.
[edit]Recruitment and professional advancement[edit]Recruitment
In a Financial Times interview, Bain partner Bill Neuenfeldt identified the desired qualities in potential hires as “intelligence, integrity, passion and the ambition to make a difference.”[18]
In addition to these basic job requirements, an entry-level Associate Consultant (AC) is typically a graduate from an elite undergraduate institution with a demonstrable enthusiasm for problem-solving and a basic analytical skill-set. No specific major is required for the AC role, though an academic background related to data-based analysis (e.g., economics, business, sciences or engineering) can be a value-add on the job.
[edit]Professional advancement
The Associate Consultant (AC) role typically lasts for 24 months, after which most ACs are promoted to the Senior Associate Consultant (SAC) role. An SAC may have the opportunity to spend six months in a Bain office of his/her choice, leave Bain for six months to work for another company or non-profit organization, or take a two month sabbatical for purely personal pursuits. After 36 months at Bain, most SAC's either leave Bain to attend graduate school (top-performing SAC's may receive funding for graduate business studies) or join another company. Some SAC's choose to stay on for a fourth year; outstanding SAC's may be promoted directly to Consultant, the post-MBA position.
Those individuals that choose to join Bain after completing their MBA or other professional/graduate training enter in the Consultant role, where they are tasked with planning and managing the analytical process that produces key insights for Bain's clients. Increasing responsibility over planning and managing this analytical process in the Consultant role leads to a Case Team Leader (CTL) role. Most CTL's leave Bain to pursue junior management positions in industry or finance; some CTL's continue on to a Manager role at Bain. Managers are tasked with overseeing several inter-related analytical processes and are increasingly exposed to clients. Several years in the Manager role with demonstrated potential to build and manage client relationships may lead to a client-facing Principal role followed by election to Partner.
As Bain & Co. is an incorporated partnership, each Partner holds an equity stake in the firm and may rise to Director (a senior partnership role) or Managing Director (an executive head of a country or region) depending upon their professional strengths and capacity to build/maintain high-level relationships.

Bain & Company

Bain & Company Profile & Stats

Bain & Company is one of the biggest and most respected names in consulting. Yet from the beginning, Bainies (as they’re known in the industry) aimed to do things a little differently from their competitors. The firm bases its fees on the financial results it achieves for its clients, acquiring contracts through word-of-mouth referrals, and following the belief that consultants should deliver ‘results, not reports’. Known for its work on everything from M&A to private equity investments, Boston headquartered Bain & Company employs over 5,000 in 42 offices, across 27 different countries.

The London office was established in 1979, and services a large range of corporate clients – more than 40% of the FTSE 100, in fact. In addition to the London branch, the firm has spread its wings across the Continent, setting up shop in Amsterdam, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Paris, Rome, Stockholm and Zurich. Bain now has more offices in Europe than in any other region; the upshot of which being more revenue comes from its Continental operations than either the North American or Asian markets.

That said, Bain is not satisfied with leaving the rest of the globe untapped. Like its consulting peers, Bain has been targeting booming areas, such as India and the Middle East, for business. But unlike its competitors, the firm is specifically targeting strategy work, rather than limiting its Indian offerings to outsourcing.

When Bill Bain left the Boston Consulting Group in 1973, he took with him a number of consultants and clients to found Bain & Company. Starting out as a three person operation in his basement, the company grew quickly, expanding into the UK market only six years later. By 1983, the firm had begun investing in its own clients and soon after began a policy of accepting equity as part of its compensation with its PE clients. In 1984, Bain Capital was launched as a spin off, and currently holds over $50 billion in assets, having invested in more than 250 companies. It is a completely separate company to Bain & Co and shares neither governance nor ownership.

In 1994, Bain became the first consulting company to establish a private equity practice. It is currently the market leader, having worked on more than half of all US and European private equity transactions worth over $1 billion in the last 10 years. This hugely successful practice provides clients – mostly leveraged buyout firms and hedge funds – with fund strategy, sector screening and deal generation, due diligence, portfolio company performance improvement and exit planning. Bain has, in part, these over performing clients to thank for its strong reputation: its clients have historically outperformed the stock market 4 to 1... at least until now! So not to rest on its laurels, Bain also implemented a clever brand reinvention strategy to help it gain greater name recognition.

Around 50% of Bain’s clients are featured among the Global 2000; the remaining are mostly private equity, small and mid-sized companies. The firm’s diverse clients hail from numerous industries, spanning aerospace and defence, automotive, consumer products, energy and utilities, financial services, health care, industrial products, media, non-profit, retail, technology, telecommunications and transportation, and include a mix of multinational firms and global companies.

Not to be out done in the altruistic stakes, Bain founded the affiliate the Bridgespan Group, in 2000, to customise management strategy approaches for non-profit clients, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Diabetes UK, Save the Children and the UCLA Johnson Cancer Centre Foundation. Around 15% of Bain’s staff rotate into Bridgespan for 6 month periods to gain experience in the sector.

In London, community support is encouraged, with an integrated community involvement programme, Bain Cares, which provides strategic and operational advice to Business Action on homelessness. Additionally, staffers take part in educational efforts in local schools by tutoring and mentoring students, planting trees, painting homeless shelters etc. And twice a year, the firm holds a ‘community impact day’, during which all employees participate in some form of community work.

[edit]Founding and early history

Bain Capital was founded in 1984 by Bain & Company partners Mitt Romney, T. Coleman Andrews III, and Eric Kriss. In 1983, Bill Bain offered Romney the chance to head a new venture that would invest in companies and apply Bain's consulting techniques to improve operations.[14] In the face of skepticism from potential investors, Romney and his partners spent a year raising the $37 million in funds needed to start the new operation, which had fewer than ten employees.[15][16][17][18] In addition to the three founding partners, the early team included Fraser Bullock, Robert F. White, Joshua Bekenstein, Adam Kirsch, and Geoffrey S. Rehnert.[19]
While Bain Capital was founded by Bain executives, the firm was not an affiliate or a division of Bain & Company but rather a completely separate company. Initially, the two firms shared the same offices and a similar approach to improving business operations. However, the two firms had put in place certain protections to avoid sharing information between the two companies and the Bain & Company executives had the ability to veto investments that posed potential conflicts of interest.[20] Bain Capital also provided an investment opportunity for partners of Bain & Company. Bain Capital's original $37 million fund was raised entirely from private individuals in mid-1984.[19] The firm initially gave a cut of its profits to Bain & Company, but Romney later persuaded Bain to give that up.[21]
Bain Capital was an initial investor in Staples, Inc.
The Bain Capital team was initially reluctant to invest its capital. The partners saw weak spots in so many potential deals that by 1986, very few had been done.[22] At first, Bain Capital focused on venture capital opportunities.[22] One of Bain's earliest and most notable venture investments was inStaples, Inc., the office supply retailer. The funding enabled Staples to expand from one store in 1986 to over 2000 stores in 2011. In 1986, Bain provided $4.5 million to two supermarket executives, Leo Kahn and Thomas G. Stemberg, to open an office supply supermarket in Brighton, Massachusetts.[23] The fast-growing retail chain went public in 1989[24] and in 1996 the company had grown to over 1,100 stores.[25] Bain Capital eventually reaped a nearly sevenfold return on its investment, and Romney sat on the Staples board of directors for over a decade.[22][17][18] Another very successful investment was a $1 million one in 1986 in medical equipment maker Calumet Coach, which eventually returned $34 million.[26] A few years later, Bain Capital made an investment in the technology research outfit the Gartner Group, which ended up returning a 16-fold gain.[26]
Bain invested the $37 million of capital in its first fund in twenty companies and by 1989 was generating an annualized return in excess of 50 percent. By the end of the decade, Bain's second fund, raised in 1987 had deployed $106 million into 13 investments.[27]

[edit]1990s

Beginning in 1989, the firm, which began as a venture capital source investing in start-up companies, adjusted its strategy to focus on leveraged buyouts and growth capital investments in more mature companies.[28] By the end of 1990, Bain had raised $175 million of capital and and financed 35 companies with combined revenues of $3.5 billion.[29]
In July 1992, Bain acquired Ampad (originally American Pad & Paper) from Mead Corporation, which had acquired the company in 1986. Mead which had been experiencing difficulties integrating Ampad's products into its existing product lines, generated a cash gain of $56 million on the sale.[30] Under Bain's ownership, the company enjoyed a significant growth in sales from $106.7 million in 1992 to $583.9 million in 1996, when the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Under Bain's ownership, the company also made a number of acquisitions, including writing products company SCM in July 1994, brand names from the American Trading and Production Corporation in August 1995, WR Acquisition and the Williamhouse-Regency Division of Delaware, Inc. in October, 1995, Niagara Envelope Company, Inc. in 1996, and Shade/Allied, Inc. in February 1997.[31] Ampad's revenue began to decline in 1997 and the company laid off employees and closed production facilities to maintain profitability. However, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and the assets were acquired in 2003 by Crescent Investments. Bain's ownership of Ampad, is estimated to have generated more than $100 million in profit for Bain.[32]
In 1994, Bain acquired Totes, a producer of umbrellas and overshoes.[33] Three years later, Totes, under Bain’s ownership, acquired Isotoner, a producer of leather gloves.[34]
Bain, together with Thomas H. Lee Partners, acquired Experian, the consumer credit reporting business of TRW, in 1996 for more than $1 billion. Formerly known as TRW's Information Systems and Services unit, Experian is one of the leading providers of credit reports on consumers and businesses in the US.[35] The company was sold to Great Universal Stores for $1.7 billion just months after being acquired.[36] Other notable Bain investments of the late 1990s included Sealy Corporation, the manufacturer of mattresses;[37] Alliance Laundry Systems;[38] Domino's Pizza[39] and Artisan Entertainment.[40]
Much of the firm's profits was earned from a relatively small number of deals, with Bain Capital's overall success and failure rate being about even. One study of 68 deals that Bain Capital made up through the 1990s found that the firm lost money or broke even on 33 of them.[41] Another study that looked at the eight-year period following 77 deals during the same time found that in 17 cases the company went bankrupt or out of business, and in 6 cases Bain Capital lost all its investment. But 10 deals were very successful and represented 70 percent of the total profits.[42]
By the end of the decade, Bain Capital was on its way to being one of the top private equity firms in the nation,[21] having increased its number of partners from 5 to 18, having 115 employees overall, and having $4 billion under its management.[16][17] Bain Capital's approach of applying consulting expertise to the companies it invested in became widely copied within the private equity industry.[43][17] University of Chicago Booth School of Business economist Steven Kaplan would later say that the firm "came up with a model that was very successful and very innovative and that now everybody uses."[18]
Romney took two leaves of absence from Bain Capital during the first half of the decade. From 1991 to 1992, Romney served as the CEO of Bain & Company where he led the successful turnaround of the consulting firm. In 1994, Romney statged an unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate seat from Massachusetts.[22][44] Romney left Bain Capital in 1999 when he became the head of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Although he had left open the possibility of returning to Bain after the Olympics, Romney made his crossover to politics permanent.[45] Romney negotiated a retirement agreement with Bain Capital that allowed him to receive a passive profit share and interest in Bain Capital investment funds in exchange for his ownership in the management company.[46][47]
In 1993 Bain acquired the Armco Worldwide Grinding System steel plant in Kansas City, Missouri and merged it with its steel plant in Georgetown, South Carolina to form GST Steel. The Kansas City plant had a strike in 1997 and Bain closed the plant in 2001 laying off 750 workers when it went into bankruptcy. The South Carolina plant closed in 2003 but subsequently reopened under a different owner. At the time of its bankruptcy it reported $553.9 million in debts against $395.2 in assets. It was charged later[by whom?] that Bain had taken $58.4 million out of the company in profits while saddling with debt and underfunding the employee pension by $44 million.[48][49][50][51]

Bain's investment in Dade Behring represented a significant investment in the medical diagnostics industry. In 1994, Bain, together with Goldman Sachs Capital Partners completed a carveout acquisition of Dade International[52], the medical diagnostics division of Baxter International in a $440 million acquisition. Dade's private equity owners merged the company with DuPont's in vitrodiagnostics business in May 1996 and subsequently with the Behring Diagnostics division of Hoechst AG in 1997.[53] Aventis, the successor of Hoechst, acquired 52% of the combined company.[54] In 1999, the company reported $1.3 billion of revenue and completed a $1.25 billion leveraged recapitalization that resulted in a payout to shareholders.[53] The dividend, taken together with other previous shareholder dividends resulted in an eightfold return on investment to Bain Capital and Goldman Sachs.[26][42] Revenues declined from 1999 through 2002 and despite attempts to cut costs through layoffs the company entered into bankruptcy in 2002. Following its restructuring, Dade Behring emerged from Bankruptcy in 2003 and continued to operate independently until 2007 when the business was acquired by Siemens Medical Solutions. Bain and Goldman lost their remaining stock in the company as part of the bankruptcy.[55] Stephen Pagliuca, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination in the 2010 Massachussetts Senate election was a member of the board of Dade Behring during Bain's ownership of the company.[53]

[edit]Early 2000s

In 2002, Bain acquired Burger Kingtogether with TPG Capital and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners
Bain Capital began the new decade by closing on its seventh fund, Bain Capital Fund VII with over $3.1 billion of investor commitments. The firm's most notable investments in 2000 included the $700 million acquisition of Datek, the online stock brokerage firm,[56] as well as the $305 million acquisition of KB Toys from Consolidated Stores.[57] Datek was ultimately merged with Ameritrade in 2002. KB Toys, which had been financially troubled since the 1990s as a result of increased pressure from national discount chains such as Wal-Mart and Target, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2004. Bain had been able to recover value on its investment through a dividend recapitalization in 2003.[58] In early 2001, Bain purchasd a 30% stake in Huntsman Corporation, a leading chemical company.[59] Bain's $600 million investment in Huntsman has been noted as an interesting footnote in the 2012 Republican Presidential nomination process since Mitt Romney's former firm (he had left Bain in 1999) acquired the company controlled by the father of another candidate Jon Huntsman (Huntsman was an executive of the company at that time).[60]
With a significant amount of committed capital in its new fund available for investment, Bain was one of a handful of private equity investors capable of completing large transactions in the adverse conditions of the early 2000s recession. In July 2002, Bain together with TPG Capital and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, announced the high profile $2.3 billion leveraged buyout of Burger King from Diageo.[61] However, in November the original transaction collapsed, when Burger King failed to meet certain performance targets. In December 2002, Bain and its co-investors agreed on a reduced $1.5 billion purchase price for the investment.[62] The Bain consortium had support from Burger King's franchisees, who controlled approximately 92% of Burger King restaurants at the time of the transaction. Under its new owners, Burger King underwent a major brand overhaul including the use of The Burger King character in advertising. In February 2006, Burger King announced plans for an initial public offering.[63]
In late 2002, Bain remained active acquiring Houghton Mifflin Company for $1.28 billion, together with Thomas H. Lee Partners and The Blackstone Group. Houghton Mifflin and Burger King represented two of the first large club deals, completed since the collapse of the Dot-com bubble.[64]
In November 2003, Bain completed an investment in Warner Music Group. In 2004 Bain acquired the Dollarama chain of dollar stores, based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and operating stores in the provinces of Eastern Canada for $1.05 billion CAD. In March 2004, Bain acquired Brenntag Group from Deutsche Bahn AG (Exited in 2006; sold to BC Partners for $4B). In August 2003, Bain acquired a 50% interest in Bombardier Inc.'s recreational products division, along with the Bombardier family and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, and created Bombardier Recreational Products or BRP.

[edit]Bain and the 2000s Buyout Boom

Bain led a consortium in the buyout ofToys "R" Us in 2004
In 2004 a consortium comprising KKR, Bain Capital and real estate development company Vornado Realty Trust announced the $6.6 billion acquisition of Toys "R" Us, the toy retailer. A month earlier, Cerberus Capital Management, made a $5.5 billion offer for both the toy and baby supplies businesses.[65] The Toys 'R' Us buyout was one of the largest in several years.[66] Following this transaction, by the end of 2004 and in 2005, major buyouts were once again becoming common and market observers were stunned by the leverage levels and financing terms obtained by financial sponsors in their buyouts.[67]
The following year, in 2005, Bain was one of seven private equity firms involved in the buyout of SunGard in a transaction valued at $11.3 billion. Bain's partners in the acquisition were Silver Lake Partners, TPG Capital, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Providence Equity Partners, and The Blackstone Group. This represented the largest leveraged buyout completed since the takeover of RJR Nabisco at the end of the 1980s leveraged buyout boom. Also, at the time of its announcement, SunGard would be the largest buyout of a technology company in history, a distinction it would cede to the buyout ofFreescale Semiconductor. The SunGard transaction is also notable in the number of firms involved in the transaction, the largest club deal completed to that point. The involvement of seven firms in the consortium was criticized by investors in private equity who considered cross-holdings among firms to be generally unattractive.[68][69]
Bain led the buyout of Dunkin' Brands for $2.4 billion in 2005
Bain led a consortium, together with The Carlyle Group and Thomas H. Lee Partners to acquire Dunkin' Brands. The private equity firms paid $2.425 billion in cash for the parent company of Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins in December 2005.[70] In May 2011, Dunkin' Brands filed with the SEC to raise up to $400 million in an initial public offering.[71]
In 2006, Bain Capital and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, together with Merrill Lynch and the Frist family (which had founded the company) completed a $31.6 billion acquisition of Hospital Corporation of America, 17 years after it was taken private for the first time in a management buyout. At the time of its announcement, the HCA buyout would be the first of several to set new records for the largest buyout, eclipsing the 1989 buyout of RJR Nabisco. It would later be surpassed by the buyouts of Equity Office Properties and TXU.[72] In August 2006, Bain was part of the consortium, together with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Silver Lake Partners and AlpInvest Partners, that acquired a controlling 80.1% share of semiconductors unit of Philips for €6.4 billion. The new company, based in the Netherlands, was renamed NXP Semiconductors.[73][74]
During the buyout boom, Bain was active in the acquisition of various retail businesses.[75] In January 2006, Bain announced the acquisition of Burlington Coat Factory, a discount retailer operating 367 department stores in 42 states, in a $2 billion buyout transaction.[76] Six months later, in October 2006, Bain and The Blackstone Group acquired Michaels Stores, the largest arts and crafts retailer in North America in a $6.0 billion leveraged buyout. Bain and Blackstone narrowly beat out Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and TPG Capital in an auction for the company.[77] In June 2007, Bain agreed to acquire HD Supply, the wholesale construction supply business of Home Depot for $10.3 billion.[78] Bain, along with partners Carlyle Group and Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, would later negotiate a lower price ($8.5 billion) when the initial stages of the subprime mortgage crisis caused lenders to seek to renegotiate the terms of the acquisition financing.[79] Just days after the announcement of the HD Supply deal, on June 27, Bain announced the acquisition of Guitar Center, the leading musical equipment retailer in the U.S. Bain paid $1.9 billion, plus $200 million in assumed debt, representing a 26% premium to the stock's closing price prior to the announcement.[80] Bain also acquired Edcon Limited, which operates Edgars Department Stores in South Africa and Zimbabwe for 25 billion-rand ($3.5 billion) in February 2007.[81]
Other investments during the buyout boom included: Bavaria Yachtbau, acquired for €1.3 billion in July 2007[82] as well as Sensata Technologies, acquired from Texas Instruments in 2006 for approximately $3 billion.[83]

[edit]Since 2008

Since the closure of the credit markets in 2007 and 2008, Bain has managed to close only a small number of sizable transactions. In July 2008, Bain, together with NBC Universal and The Blackstone Group agreed to purchase The Weather Channel from Landmark Communications.[84][85]
Other recent investments include:

Bain Capital itself, and especially its actions during its first 15 years, came under press scrutiny as the result of Romney's 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns.[26][91][92] However, Bain Capital made as few comments as possible, as even by the standards of the private equity industry it was known for its commitment towards secrecy about itself and privacy for its clients and investors.[92]

Roemer Drops Out of GOP Race

    11:11 AM, FEB 22, 2012 • BY MICHAEL WARREN

Former Louisiana governor Buddy Roemer is dropping out of the Republican presidential primary race, but will continue to run for president by seeking a third-party nomination. The Chicago Tribune reports:

The former Louisiana governor will make his plans official Thursday at a news conference in Santa Monica, within hours of another Republican debate that he's been excluded from.
It's that fact that is driving his decision. The party and the major television networks have "turned their backs on the democratic process" by excluding him, even though he's a former governor and congressman, he said in a statement.
Roemer has been waging a campaign based in part on ending the influence of special interests in American politics. He capped donations to his campaign at just $100, and raised about $340,000 from individual donors.
He says he will now run for the nomination of Americans Elect, an independent group seeking ballot access in all 50 states that plans to hold an Internet primary to choose a bipartisan ticket.
Elliot Ackerman of Americans Elect recently told THE WEEKLY STANDARD that his organization wants to break the "anticompetitive duopoly" of the two major parties by fielding a candidate who won't be forced "into the two narrow boxes that the two major parties have regarding policy positions." Could Roemer be the candidate to fit that mold? On the Americans Elect website, he currently has 413 supporters and rising.

After three months of treatment at Cirque Lodge, Charlie Sheen's ex-wife, Brooke Mueller, is ready to get back to her normal life.
Mueller's rep Steve Honig, told RadarOnline his 34-year-old client successfully completed an intensive three-month drug and alcohol treatment program.
"Brooke returned to Los Angeles yesterday and has immediately begun an aggressive outpatient program that includes a sober companion," he said. "Brooke is feeling better than ever before, and is committed to continuing treatment for as long as necessary to maintain her total and complete sobriety."
The actress and mother of twin boys entered rehab in early December after she was arrested in Aspen, Colorado, for cocaine possession and assault charges.
It's not the first time Mueller has been to rehab, but sources say her stay at Utah's Cirque Lodge has been her longest. According to an insider, Mueller participated in day programs during her previous attempts at treatment. Her enrollment in a residential program where she wasn't able to make decisions about how she was going to be treated made all the difference.
"She needed long term residential treatment and she got it," the source told RadarOnline. "Brooke is very hopeful for her future, and wants to focus on her recovery and sobriety and being the best mom she can be to her twin toddler sons."

Jeremy Mayfield: NASCAR appears to have coordinated with investigators on 'baseless' indictment

PUBLISHED 2 days and 1 hour ago

    Bob PockrassSporting News
    Text sizeAAA
Suspended NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield, embattled in a lawsuit with NASCAR over the results of a 2009 drug test, was indicted by a Catawba County (N.C.) grand jury Monday on charges of possession of stolen goods stemming from a Nov. 1 search of his property.
The charges—three felony counts of possession of stolen goods from Fitz Motorsports, Red Bull Racing and office equipment from DEA Ventures—were not a major surprise as law enforcement officials last November seized more than $100,000 with of goods that had been reported stolen. Also found was 1.5 grams of methamphetamine, and Mayfield was indicted on charges of felony possession of the drug in November. The drug case is pending with March 5 as the next scheduled court date.
Mayfield called the charges "baseless" in a statement he released Monday. He indicated the goods were the property of him and his wife and they had been cooperating with investigators since November.
"For some reason, the district attorney’s office simply ignored our offers to explain the sources of the items seized from my property and chose, instead, to indict," Mayfield said. "We do not know if there is any connection between the NASCAR lawsuit and this investigation, but based upon the evidence disclosed to us already by the district attorney’s office, it appears that the Catawba County authorities have been coordinating with NASCAR officials."
NASCAR spokesman David Higdon wouldn't specifically comment on whether NASCAR has talked with Catawba County authorities.
"We've been clear throughout our legal matter with Mr. Mayfield, and we're very comfortable with how we've handled this situation and our case," Higdon said. "We look forward to its resolution very soon."
According to the original search warrant, a source went to police and told them about the stolen goods on the Mayfield property.
"Before this investigation, I have never been charged with any crime more serious than speeding tickets," Mayfield said. "But this investigation apparently started and is based upon the statements of man with a lengthy criminal record. I have offered to cooperate fully with the prosecutors and the sheriff’s department, yet the witness who brought these allegations against me has refused to be interviewed by my attorneys.
"We are left with no choice now but to fight this out in court."
According to the search warrant, a source told police that Mayfield was among a group of people that broke into Fitz Motorsports and stole two surface plates to sell as scrap metal and broke into Red Bull Racing and stole audio equipment and aluminum flooring.
The initial warrant lists three other companies whose reported stolen goods were found on Mayfield's property. The items, according to the warrant, included scrap metal, semi-truck accessories, truck parts, gears and welding equipment.
Seized during the raid on Mayfield’s property was nearly $30,000 of items from Larry Grant and Company (machinery transformers, motorized truck mirrors, lights and hydraulic rubber hose sets) and approximately $67,000 worth of items from Lee Family Real Estate (a welder, alternators, radiators, and buckets and bins of hydraulic fittings), according to the warrant.
Audio visual equipment seized, according to the warrant, included three speakers, stage equipment, a woofer, a mixer and two commercial televisions.
Also among the items seized from Mayfield’s property were a meth pipe and a butane lighter, according to the list of items recovered, which was included in the warrant.
Police returned a few weeks later to recover furniture that had been reported stolen. According to that search warrant, police said Mayfield and another man were in a rear lot at Anderson Truck Lines at 3 a.m. Feb. 26 with a conventional-cab “big rig” style truck used for pulling trailers. Mayfield told them they were resting and police left. Later that day, according to the warrant, four business trailers were reported stolen by Anderson Truck Lines.
"We had offered to provide receipts and photographs showing that the property which the sheriff’s department took from my home, in fact, belongs to me and my wife," Mayfield said. "Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property which legally belongs to me has been seized and kept or distributed to others by the Catawba County sheriff’s department."
Mayfield was suspended by NASCAR in May 2009 after failing a drug test that NASCAR officials say was positive for methamphetamine. NASCAR officials also said that Mayfield failed another drug test in July 2009.
Mayfield is suing NASCAR over his 2009 suspension. Saying that Mayfield couldn’t sue because of waivers he had signed to compete in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, a judge ruled in favor of NASCAR in May 2010 before the case could ever make it to trial. The U.S. Court of Appeals held a Jan. 24 hearing but has not released a decision on whether to reverse the judge’s ruling.
Mayfield has said he has never used methamphetamine and that the tests are a false positive for a mix of over-the-counter allergy medication and prescription medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
When asked why Mayfield would deal in stolen property, according to the affidavit, “the source advised that Mayfield is a consistent user of methamphetamine and often consumes up to an ounce a day of that substance. The source alleges to have personally witnessed Mayfield purchase and consume methamphetamine over 500 separate times.”

    Here We Are
Women who stand in favor of religious liberty

Like countless other women, we’ve been closely following the Obama administration’s attempt to compel religious institutions to provide contraceptive coverage in violation of their beliefs. And like countless other women, over the past several days we’ve heard House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and others repeatedly ask those who oppose the contraceptive mandate, “Where are the women?”
    Here we are.
We listened to prominent women purport to speak for us. We watched them duck the fundamental religious-liberty issues at stake. And we saw them assume that all women view cheaper contraceptives and abortion-causing drugs as unqualified goods.
In response, we circulated an open letterto a few dozen of our female friends in support of the competing voice offered by Catholic institutions on matters of sex, marriage, and family life. The letter spread, and in 72 hours we received some 750 signatures from a diverse group of women across the country, including women serving overseas. Signatures are still flooding in. Doctors, nurses, lawyers, teachers, mothers, business owners, community volunteers, scholars — women from all walks of life are proud to stand together with the Catholic Church and its invaluable witness.
Most of us are Catholic, but some are not. We are Democrats, Republicans, and independents. Many work or have worked for a Catholic institution. We are proud to have been associated not only with the work that Catholic institutions perform in the community — particularly for the most vulnerable — but also with the shared sense of purpose found among colleagues who chose their job because, in a religious institution, a job is also a vocation.
To a woman, we are deeply troubled by the mandate’s violation of fundamental religious-liberty protections. Detailed analyses of the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act issues at stake here have already appeared in these pages. But we note that under RFRA, the government cannot substantially burden religious freedom unless the burden furthers a compelling government interest and is the “least restrictive” means of furthering that interest. Yet in the face of widespread opposition, the Obama administration was able to quickly revise the mandate to a version it (wrongly) considers “less restrictive” than its original proposal. That tells you all you need to know about how seriously the administration took its obligation to abide by RFRA in the first place.
Those who invoke “women’s health” against those of us who disagree with forcing religious institutions or individuals to violate deeply held beliefs are more than a little mistaken — and more than a little dishonest. Even setting aside their simplistic equation of “costless” birth control with “equality” and “women’s health,” note that they have never responded to the large body of scholarly research indicating that many forms of contraception have serious side effects; or that some contraceptives destroy embryos; or that government contraceptive programs inevitably change the sex, dating, and marriage markets in ways that lead to more empty sex, more non-marital births, and more abortions. It is women who suffer disproportionately when these things happen.
No one speaks for all women on these issues. Those who purport to do so are simply attempting to deflect attention from the serious religious-liberty issues at stake. We are proud to stand with the Catholic Church and its rich, life-affirming teachings on sex, marriage, and family life. We call on President Obama, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and our representatives in Congress to respect religious voices, to respect religious liberty, and to allow religious institutions and individuals to continue to provide witness to their faiths in all their fullness.

Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the Lord of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.

Churlish souls stint their contributions to the ministry and missionary operations, and call such saving good economy; little do they dream that they are thus impoverishing themselves. Their excuse is that they must care for their own families, and they forget that to neglect the house of God is the sure way to bring ruin upon their own houses. Our God has a method in providence by which He can succeed our endeavours beyond our expectation, or can defeat our plans to our confusion and dismay; by a turn of His hand He can steer our vessel in a profitable channel, or run it aground in poverty and bankruptcy. It is the teaching of Scripture that the Lord enriches the liberal and leaves the miserly to find out that withholding tendeth to poverty. In a very wide sphere of observation, I have noticed that the most generous Christians of my acquaintance have been always the most happy, and almost invariably the most prosperous. I have seen the liberal giver rise to wealth of which he never dreamed; and I have as often seen the mean, ungenerous churl descend to poverty by the very parsimony by which he thought to rise. Men trust good stewards with larger and larger sums, and so it frequently is with the Lord; He gives by cartloads to those who give by bushels. Where wealth is not bestowed the Lord makes the little much by the contentment which the sanctified heart feels in a portion of which the tithe has been dedicated to the Lord. Selfishness looks first at home, but godliness seeks first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, yet in the long run selfishness is loss, and godliness is great gain. It needs faith to act towards our God with an open hand, but surely He deserves it of us; and all that we can do is a very poor acknowledgment of our amazing indebtedness to His goodness.
